BSB40120 Certificate IV in Business

and

1126NAT Certificate IV in Work Skills for Career Enhancement and Management

Contact:       Mr Kyal Rose, Subject Coordinator

The dual Certificate IV pathway is an engaging and practical two-year course, beginning in Year Eleve, where you'll gain two nationally recognised qualifications:

  • Certificate IV in Business (BSB40120)
  • Certificate IV in Work Skills for Career Enhancement and Management (11264NAT)

A combination of qualifications offering impact, they also offer essential business and workplace skills, which means you're well-prepared for whether you move straight into the workforce or pursue further studies.

Please note that there is an additional cost for this course.

Prerequisites: To help ensure a good fit for the course, students are asked to submit a short written statement that reflects not only their best efforts in written communication, but includes detail about:

  • Consistent academic efforts in Year 10, ideally with a B-grade average or above.
  • A willingness to work independently and stay motivated throughout the course.
  • Family support for participation in a course designed for adult learners, which routinely involves engagement beyond the regular school day (such as weekday evenings, weekends, and on the rare occasion – school holidays)

Why Choose it?

  • Take part in impactful community initiatives like the Albany Community Foundation’s Big Sleepout, allowing real contexts for applying skills in meaningful ways.
  • Experience diverse, simulated business scenarios (such as running an eSports software company) that develop your practical skills.
  • Learn skills that matter, including leadership, effective communication, sustainability practices, and creative project development – all relevant to every industry and career.
  • Completing two certificates gives you a significant advantage, boosting your employability and flexibility in your career choices.
  • You'll engage in realistic, hands-on assessments that genuinely demonstrate your workplace skills, without lengthy essays or examinations.
  • The Australian Institute of Technology Transfer (AITT – RTO 50834), our partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO), provides an added layer of support through their experienced team of online facilitators, industry mentors, and interactive workshops delivered in class multiple times per year.

Outcomes:

  • Upon successful completion of all fifteen Units of Competency (UoC) students may attain two national qualifications.
  • An Indicative 70 ATAR will be achieved by students who complete the requirements of the course.
  • Six-unit points towards WACE will be allocated to students who complete the requirements of a Certificate III or Certificate IV courses.
  • Focuses on practical skills, especially beneficial if you prefer hands-on learning to traditional exams

Year Eleven and Twelve VET Business Assessment:

Assessments are based on practical and applied tasks drawn from the National Business Training Package and Employment Skills Programmes, facilitated by the Australian Institute of Technology Transfer (AITT – RTO 50834).

Students are expected to manage their learning using a hybrid engagement model:

  • Independent work outside of class, including evenings, weekends, and holidays where needed.
  • Collaborative work during class, engaging with both peers and teacher.

Final resulting of assessments is by AITT, not GSG.  All work is completed using school-provided devices, and students access resources and assessments through Canvas, a learning management system used widely across Australian universities. All course materials, feedback, and communication are accessible at any time via Canvas.

Unit results are updated and reflected in SEQTA at the end of each school-term.

To stay on track, students should plan for approx. 4-5 hours of engagement outside of class time each week during term. This is in addition to attending all scheduled classes.

Events such as The Big Sleepout (and others as determined during the course) are part of the in-school assessment program and are compulsory.

Students with ongoing absences due to School-Based Training (SBT) or other commitments must proactively manage their time, (i.e.: complete tasks in advance), and meet all submission deadlines. Double periods are essential learning blocks, and it is strongly advised that students avoid SBT (or other) clashes with double periods.

Year Eleven and Twelve VET Hospitality Assessment

The Certificate II in Hospitality consists of twelve (12) Units of Competency (UoC) that must all be satisfactorily completed by the student to be deemed competent in this qualification.

Assessments are based on practical tasks from the National Hospitality and Tourism Training Package, administered at school and facilitated through the Registered Training Organisation (Quality Service Skills 90791).  Most practical work and assessments for this course are completed during class time.

Each UoC is assessed differently. There is always a selection from the following:

  • Online assessment tasks - Knowledge Based Test
  • Activities
  • Projects
  • Practical Demonstrations
  • Logbook

Evidence is required for each UoC, most of which is online through the RTO  platform called “anewspring”.    Maintenance of this online evidence is the responsibility of each student.  Whilst most practical demonstrations are arranged and completed at school, on the job observation can be arranged to meet minimum requirements, that is, the teacher must attend the workplace to assess the student. Workplace learning, paid employment, or work placement are options for consideration but not recommended. Often, the practical demonstrations at school are held during recess and/or lunchtime or after school hours and are compulsory.  Only a few practical demonstrations occur off campus in the community and can be in the evening, and/or on weekends, and are compulsory.  The cooking units require students to wear a chef uniform which is supplied by the school. Students are charged a bond to their school account that is refunded at the end of Year 12 once the uniform is returned.

A minimum of twelve functions (serving customers) MUST be completed, usually six in Year Eleven and six in Year Twelve and recorded in a logbook with photographic evidence.  The dates of these functions are outlined in a timely manner.  They are compulsory, students are expected to attend them all and make alternative arrangements to outside commitments such as sport and work if necessary.  A Hospitality function uniform will be arranged by the trainer to be purchased by the student and worn at every function.

All assessments, other than some of the practical demonstrations, are completed during class time.  All students attempt the written/theory assessments electronically which are completed online through the anewspring  platform supplied by the RTO.  These are deemed competent by the teacher, then verified by the RTO: Quality Service Skills .
