Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

Jesus, the Bread of Life

This week the Catholic Church celebrates The Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the great gift of the Eucharist.

On this special feast day, we remember that Jesus gives Himself to us in Holy Communion and remains present with us through the Eucharist.

The Eucharist nourishes us spiritually, strengthens our faith and unites us as one family in Christ.

In the First Reading from Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people of Israel how God cared for them in the desert. When they were hungry, God provided manna from heaven to feed them and teach them to trust in Him.

We hear the Israelites faced many challenges during their journey through the desert, yet God never abandoned them. He provided food, water and guidance.

This reading reminds us that God always cares for His people. Just as God fed the Israelites with manna, He now feeds us with the Eucharist, the true Bread from Heaven.

The Responsorial Psalm is a song of praise and thanksgiving. It reminds us to thank God for His blessings, His protection and His love. Every time we gather for Mass, we are invited to praise God with grateful hearts for the gift of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Through the Second Reading from St. In Paul's First letter to the Corinthians, he teaches that although we are many people, we become one body when we share in the one bread and one cup of Christ.

The Eucharist not only brings us closer to Jesus but also unites us with one another. We belong to God's family. When we receive Holy Communion, we are reminded that we are called to love, support and care for one another as members of the Body of Christ.

Finally in the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus tells the people, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” He teaches that whoever receives Him will have eternal life.

Jesus wants us to understand that the Eucharist is much more than ordinary bread. Through the Eucharist, Jesus gives us His very self. He nourishes our hearts, strengthens our faith and remains with us always. The Eucharist helps us grow in love, kindness and service to others.

Overall this feast of Corpus Christi invites us to reflect deeply on the gift of the Eucharist. Every Mass is an opportunity to encounter Jesus in a special way. The Eucharist reminds us that God is always close to us and desires a relationship with us.

Just as food gives strength to our bodies, the Eucharist gives strength to our souls. It helps us to live as followers of Jesus, showing love, forgiveness, compassion and generosity in our daily lives.

This feast also reminds us that we are one community. We are called to care for one another, especially those who are lonely, struggling or in need. Through the Eucharist, we become the Body of Christ in the world, bringing hope and God's love to others.

Discussion Starters

As we celebrate Corpus Christi, we can ask ourselves:

  • Do I recognise the Eucharist as a special gift from Jesus?
  • How can I grow closer to Jesus through prayer and Mass?
  • How can I be the Body of Christ for others through my words and actions?
  • What special food did God give the Israelites in the desert?
  • What is the Eucharist?
  • How does Jesus stay close to us?
  • How can you show kindness to others this week?
  • Why is the Eucharist important to Catholics?
  • What does Jesus mean when He says He is the Bread of Life?
  • How does receiving Communion help us?
  • How can we show that we belong to God's family?
  • Why is Corpus Christi an important feast in the Church?
  • How does the Eucharist unite us as one body?
  • What responsibilities come with being part of the Body of Christ?
  • How can we bring Jesus' presence to others in our community?

And together as many parts and ONE family of SFS let us Pray:

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for the gift of the Eucharist.Thank You for feeding us with the Bread of Life and staying with us always.

Help us to grow closer to You, to recognise Your presence at Mass, and to live as members of Your Body.

Teach us to love others as You love us and to bring hope, kindness and peaceto everyone we meet.

Amen.
