Year 5

Literacy

The Year 5 students have recently finished reading Dirrarn as part of their literacy learning. Throughout the novel study, students explored the themes, characters, and important messages within the text while developing their comprehension and analytical thinking skills.

Students engaged in a range of activities, including discussing character development, identifying literary techniques, making predictions, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. They also reflected on the cultural perspectives and connections presented throughout the story, deepening their understanding and appreciation of Australia's rich histories and cultures.

Students will spend the next week finishing off their Jandamarra factual recount.

Maths

In Mathematics, we have completed our Probability unit where we looked at chance and the theoritcal probability.  Now we are moving into 2D Shapes looking at transofrmations (rotation, reflection and translation) We will conclude the term by focusing on 12- and 24-hour time.

Times Table Rockstars

Please make sure all students are playing TTRS each night for 5–10 minutes. Building automaticity in multiplication is an extremely important foundational skill for success in Maths. Regular practice helps strengthen recall and supports confidence when working with more complex number concepts.

Topic

We have completed our unit on plant adaptations and have now begun exploring changes to the Earth’s surface. Students have been investigating how landscapes are shaped over time through biological and chemical weathering. We have discussed how living things, water, wind, and temperature changes can slowly break down rocks and change the environment. Students have enjoyed observing examples and making connections to real-world landscapes and how they continue to change.

Book Presentation

Bookwork has been a big focus in Year 5 over the past few weeks, as we encourage students to take pride in their work and always aim for their personal best. It’s important that this continues at home through their homework and handwriting practice. This week’s homework has a strong focus on handwriting, along with a short Maths sheet to consolidate their learning.

Year 6

Lightening Premiership Soccer

What an amazing effort by our girls’ and boys’ Lightning Premier Soccer teams. In a close penalty shootout that went down to the wire, our girls’ soccer team won and are now through to the next round.

Interschool Sport

Lily Beckett

Every Friday since the beginning of the term, after the lunch bell goes, the year 5 and 6 students have interschool sports. The sports you can do are netball or footy. But I chose netball. In netball, there are 3 teams, white, blue, and red.Every week it rotates on which teams go to another school or stay at home. The teams are really fair and you get at least one of your friends. Normally netball white (which is my team) goes away, because we always go on the bus with the footy team,  red. Every week for transportation we take the bus and visit schools like St Joan of Arc, Galilee, St Mary’s, and St finbars.

Getting ready for the bus:

Every Friday, once the lunch bell goes, everyone gets ready. The netball, and footy players go upstairs and get their bags, and put on their netball and footy shoes. We all then meet on the blue court and line up in our teams. Then we say our goodbyes and head on the bus.

What are the rules of netball?

The rules for interschool sports are a little different to your normal weekend sport, on the weekend it depends on the division you're in, but normally it's pretty hard, and for interschool sports it is a little bit more chill, but everyone tries their absolute best they can. On a netball court there are 7 positions, which consist of three different groups, mid courters, defenders and shooters. Some of the rules of netball include: stepping ( your grounded foot has to stay on the floor ), obstruction ( you have to be 3 feet away from the player with the ball ), replay ball ( you can't  bounce the ball on the floor and pick it back up ), held ball ( you can only hold the ball for 3 seconds ), and contact ( you can push or shove your player hardly, with or without the ball) those are some of the rules of netball.

At the end of the match, we all line up in our teams and high five the other team. Or we all get in a circle, and one person from each team says something like  “ thank you for coming, we enjoyed playing against you” and then we wait for the bus and go back to school.

Interschool Sport

Milo Stynes

Interschool Sport is what we do every Friday in Term 2. You could either play Netball or Footy, Netball is played on courts and Footy is played on a big oval but most of the time it is many different sizes if you’re playing away which sometimes could be hard if you're not used to it.

After Lunch the players that play away go get their bags from their classrooms and get on the bus! Footy players always go away because our oval is too small but Netballers have it a bit easier because our courts are just the right size.

Netball is a game of concentration and skill, we have 7 positions GD,GA,GS,WD,WA,GK and C. Each one plays very special roles. There are four quarters, each normally going for 8 to 10 minutes. You cannot move while holding the ball let alone go where you are not supposed to, make sure you get these right so you can play like a pro! At the end of each game both teams come in a circle to congratulate each other for coming and playing with great sportsmanship.

After the games the Netballers can go play outside because most of the time when we end its recess. I like to walk around with my friends making new friends from the other team!

I loved this year of Netball because everything is just amazing like making friends, trying new things and maybe shooting your first ever goal! I’m so excited for Lightning Premierships to play with my friend and to play new schools.
