Years 3 - 5

This week, our learning has been rich and engaging across all subject areas.
In English, we have been exploring how Roald Dahl uses imagery and exaggeration in Matilda, particularly within the prank scenes. This inspired students to experiment with these techniques in their own writing, as they planned and created imaginative prank stories filled with vivid description and playful exaggeration.
In Mathematics, as part of our 3D unit, we have begun investigating nets. Students were challenged to discover the 11 possible nets of a cube using geo-shape tiles. This hands-on task encouraged problem-solving, spatial reasoning and persistence as students tested and recorded successful nets.
In Science, we conducted an experiment to explore reversible change and the process of dissolving. Students created a saturated solution by mixing borax with hot water, then submerged a pipe cleaner into the mixture. As the solution cooled overnight, crystals formed on the pipe cleaner. We discussed how, as the water cools, the dissolved particles come back together and attach to the pipe cleaner, demonstrating how materials can change and be recovered.
In Art, students explored the wax resist technique using oil pastels and watercolours to create detailed sea creature artworks. They began by drawing and firmly outlining their sea creature with white oil pastel, adding patterns and texture. Students then applied watercolours, using cool colours for the ocean background and warm colours within their sea creature. The wax resist technique prevented the paint from spreading over the pastel, helping to clearly define their designs.
