Classroom Update: Sustainability in Action

This term, our classroom learning has focused on the theme of sustainability. It has been a rewarding experience watching the students engage so thoughtfully with the environmental and practical aspects of this topic, looking closely at how everyday choices impact the world around them.

Persuasive Writing and Student Initiatives

In our writing unit, students are working hard on their culminating task: a persuasive text detailing how our school can implement more sustainable practices. The class has identified several fantastic areas where they believe we can make a meaningful difference, showing great initiative with their ideas. Their main proposals include:

  • Upgrading our current recycling system to incorporate a dedicated soft plastics collection.
  • Introducing school chickens to help manage organic waste and create a sustainable ecosystem.

To give the students a sense of real-world purpose, I've told them that their final pieces will be shared with Mrs Bearman for her consideration. They are putting a lot of effort into making their arguments as strong and convincing as possible, and they are genuinely excited about the opportunity to make a positive impact on our school.

Cross-Curricular Connections in Art

We have also integrated our sustainability theme into our creative arts program, where students have been collecting clean household waste to construct artwork that communicates a clear environmental message.

The planning phase is now complete, and the students have developed some wonderful, thoughtful concepts. We have a variety of creative projects underway, including:

  • Sculptures of marine life highlighting the impact of waste on ocean creatures.
  • Collages of waterways and natural environments depicting the effects of pollution.

Below is a preview of some of the designs in progress.

Upon completion of their pieces, students will write a formal artist statement. This task asks them to synthesise their learning by including a verified sustainability fact, a slogan promoting sustainable choices, and a description of the recycled materials used.

The students are putting a great deal of effort into these projects, and we look forward to sharing their final writing and artwork with the school community soon.
