Chaplain's Message
Greetings from a beautiful, post wet Alice Springs - the flowing Todd has been beetling its way into the desert carrying all the rubbish from an ex dry river bed. So exciting! New life, new growth in time for Easter!
I heard a wonderful reflection from a fellow Zimbabwean in church on Sunday as she was unpacking Palm Sunday. Jesus riding into Jerusalem for the last time on a donkey! As we know, this was to be his last supper with his disciples before the crucifixion.
But on a donkey - really?? A generally despised and rejected little creature, the donkey is considered little more than a beast of burden! (I have to admit, I actually love donkeys, but I'm in the minority) So the question remains why a donkey - these days the King would travel in a carriage, in those days at least a white stallion. Those by the roadside waved Palm branches to welcome him into the city, these days they would have flags and flower petals!
Jesus was making a statement - he was indeed a different kind of King, a king of hearts maybe but to Jesus no creature is despised and rejected. He took this little colt and he raised it up to a sacred space, even if for just the journey.
We are all on a journey and my prayer this Easter is that we all find our sacred space - as we celebrate or go to work, go to church or look after our precious cargo at St Philips, may we remember that we are charged with caring for our vulnerable, our children, for our "team"!
May we help each other find that sacred space for the journey. Jesus came to take us all along with him - please don't pass up the opportunity!
I wish you all a really happy and blessed Easter - look after yourselves, keep safe.
With love,
