School Holiday Programs and Festivals at Story Studios Australia
Story Studios Australia/Melbourne Young Writers’ Studio runs creative school holiday programs that are all uniquely designed to immerse young writers into worlds, themes, genres, characters and more. You will regularly see epic days of mystery, screenwriting days for teens, days full of magic and fantasy, creative days of mythology, and even collaborations, with past event partners such as Ukiyo, Melbourne’s top escape room and Writers Victoria at The Wheeler Centre!
SSA/MYWS holiday programs provide the perfect sanctuary for kids to be inspired and deepen their storytelling and creative writing skills in a fun and collaborative environment.
The programs are very popular and often book out!
Please note that holiday programs take place in our Carlton studio and online, while festivals are much bigger days and run at 75 Reid Street in Fitzroy North.

Animalia

The jungle growls with the sounds of the animal kingdom. Wild winds sweep the savanna beneath shimmering skies, speckled with flurried flocks of strange birds. Deep lakes lurk with shifting shapes of ominous shadows. Welcome to Animalia! An immersive day of creative writing involving all things beasts, bugs, critters and creatures. We’ll be discussing the laws of the jungle and the lore of stories set within these wondrous, hostile environments. Which creatures are heroes, and which are villains? How will your characters survive the tangled, wild world of Animalia?

Peculiar places full of curious characters lie just beyond the familiar, but never out of reach. Young writers will take a leap into the strange beyond in this day of eccentricity and adventure! Imaginations will take the reins as we encounter kooky characters and mind-bending universes, lurking dangers and offbeat hilarity. What discoveries might young writers make in the weird worlds of their design? What is concealed at the heart of their quirky quests? We will laugh, and we will learn!
Lego Legends

Calling all Lego architects! Our world turns to pixels, bricks and blockheads during this day of Lego world building and character creation. We’ll be sharing our construction skills to create tall, technicolor towers and populate them with heroes, villains and everything in between. Experience the rays of inspiration that shine from within these timeless toys and most importantly - the stories we imagine when we bring these worlds to life, brick by brick.
FRESH FICTION WRITING COMPETITION
In Term 2 submissions will open for our Fresh Fiction Writing Competition! There are now three categories and prizes up for grabs:
KIDS: 7-12 years - $150 prize
TEENS: 13-17 years - $300 prize
ADULTS: 18+ years - $500 prize
Winning stories will also be published their website and socials.
Tomorrow is a Brand-New Day is an uplifting tribute to learning and growing – to making mistakes and making amends. Hard days come and go, but love is with us always.
Set to the sounds of wind and percussion instruments, this new work brings Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys’ charming picture book to life with a score by Alan John. This is the latest in Orchestra Victoria’s series of concerts for families that tell Australian stories through musical adaptions of acclaimed children’s books.
This relaxed, interactive musical Storytime invites children to participate in the storytelling and discover the sounds of different musical instruments. Narrated by beloved storyteller Janet McLeod, this is a perfect first musical experience for young people aged 5-8. Young (and young at heart) readers and music-lovers will be singing and dancing all the way home.
Orchestra Victoria would like to offer a community discount to families and staff at Carlton North Primary School.
The performances are running Thursday – Saturday in the second week of the school holidays at The Wheeler Centre. Families can access a 10% discount using the code TOMORROW10 before selecting ticket types, and discounted ones will appear.

School Holiday Science Workshops
Swinburne Wantirna: 3-5 April 2024
Attention Junior Scientists! Get ready for three days filled with new hands-on holiday science for curious kids from Kinder to Year 8! The PrimeSCI! Team are excited to welcome you to Swinburne Wantirna.
Exciting new workshops will include Animal Behaviour Tracking, Cells, Circuits and Currents, and Edisons Space Code Quest.
