Maths

In 2024, our teachers, students and leaders will continue to explore best practice in Mathematics.
Maths is taught one hour per day with each Maths session beginning with a ten minute focus on mental strategies(called a Maths Blast) for concepts such as counting forwards and backwards, addition and subtraction or multiplication and division. This helps support fluency and recall of number patterns and facts when working on written or more formal algorithms.
At home you could have a go at some of the Maths Blast games that your child has learned or have a go at counting together by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s or 100s.
Maths Assessment
Foundation students have participated in a Mathematics online interview tool to gain an insight into their knowledge. The testing has focused on counting forwards and backwards, numeral identification and counting, reading and recognising numbers. Teachers also regularly use pre/post assessments for each unit throughout the term.
Year 1 and 2 have participated in the Mathematics online interview tool that we are using as part of the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Early Number and Algebra Program. Early Number and Algebra (ENA) is designed to support Mathematics leaders and teachers in developing a detailed understanding of how children learn Mathematics in the early years of schooling. This term we have focused on Counting and Place Value.
Teachers also regularly use pre/post assessments for each unit throughout the term.
Year 3 to 6 students undertake Math pre/post assessment tasks that support teachers in the assessment process aligning to units of work throughout the term. The Year 3 and 5 students are also currently participating in Naplan which is another tool for teachers to assess students’ educational progress.
