HEALTH: YEAR 10 FOOD STUDIES

Welcome to the wonderful world of Year 10 Food Studies! Students have embarked on a journey of knowledge and culinary skills this semester with topics such as Australian Indigenous foods, migration to Australia, global foods, food trends, and challenges faced by farmers today due to climate change.

Students have just completed their ‘Main Meal’ investigation task where they used decision making skills to solve a question we are faced with every day…What to cook for dinner? Can we make it within a budget, a certain time frame, nutritious and appealing, all at the same time? Students addressed all of these concerns by investigating viable options, planning, producing and finally evaluating their product and skills.

I am thrilled to present the following passages written by a few of our current Year 10 Food Studies students about their experiences in Food thus far:

Dorothea Papadimitriou: This semester has been a wonderful experience in Food Tech, cooking delicious meals from different parts of the world, every week taste testing and analysing different foods, which allowed us to experience foods from all over the world with a variety of spices and flavours. It was fascinating to learn about the origins of these foods and how they have influenced what we Australians eat. Making our own meal was one of my favourite Food Tech experiences this year. It was exciting to watch my classmates create delicious meals from many countries, and it was a lot of joy to work independently on a dish I liked.

Noam Hoory: This semester I have enjoyed cooking the most. Food Tech's most memorable moments for me was when I got to cook different foods with my partner. I got to make meals I wouldn't usually make. We made a cheesecake from scratch; it turned out so well I wasn't the only one to enjoy it. Although the cooking part is fun, I learnt a whole lot about different cultures and their foods. I now know about hygienic methods when cooking and how to be safe in the kitchen. I acquired skills in how to manage my time and keep my bench all in order. I've become proficient in lots of types of foods from other countries than my own.

Lucinda Ledger: This semester Food Tech has been a lot of fun. In our recent learning task, we got to choose a main meal that had to include a protein, a side salad or vegetables and also make the presentation look nice. I made a teriyaki salmon poke bowl. It was challenging because we had a time frame and creating the teriyaki marinade was difficult but ended up tasting great. Everyone was helping each other find things as the table was full of everyone's ingredients. So far Food tech has been really fun and I’ve learnt a lot about different cultures and how different ingredients came to Australia.

The remainder of the semester students look forward to exploring the concerns of food insecurity, eating well and the science of food! A jam-packed curriculum where students explore current topics within the food industry and health education.
