Music Matters

This week, one of our esteemed Ensemble Directors, Mr Geoff Power, has been visiting some of our Year 5 music classes showcasing the tuba, which belongs to our ‘Endangered’ Instruments program. We are currently offering free instrument hire on the tuba (as well as the oboe, bassoon, bass trombone, and double bass), with students expected to undertake (subsidised) private tuition and eventually participate in a relevant ensemble. The instruments available to be hired free of charge on Clipboard are:

  • Tuba
  • Oboe
  • Bassoon
  • Bass Trombone
  • Double Bass

Please contact your private tutor, Ensemble Director or music teacher via The Performing Arts office sperformingarts@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au  for further information.

Year 7 Improvisations

Year 7 students have been participating in physical improvisations without speaking. They are learning to follow instructions and develop their own physical ideas to create characters and present context in both real and unreal situations. Additionally, the students have successfully created inanimate objects and physical postcards while working closely together. By making physical offers and working in groups, the students are quickly and successfully learning how to collaborate and foster creativity.

 Upcoming Drama Events:

  • Thursday 11 April: HSC Drama Gifted & Talented workshop is to be held at St Catherine’s School. Students will take part in a full day devising workshop with professional theatre company Force Majeure. This is a wonderful opportunity for the class to brush up on their devising skills ready for the start of Term 2 when they begin working on their Group Project.
  • Wednesday 1 May: All Year 8 students will watch a Commedia Comedy Show from 1:30 pm in the Sarto Centre. (This show has been kindly paid for by PAPA). Commedia del’arte is widely regarded as the beginnings of all modern comedy. It relies on stock characters and was originally an improvised show that travelled through Northern Italy.
  • Wednesday 8 May: Drama Elective groups Years 9, 10 & 11 will go to Sydney Theatre Company to watch Dario Fo & Franca Rame’s famous play, Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay! (This event has been kindly paid for by PAPA). This is part of STC’s School Day Performances 2024 and is a wonderful opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a professional production.
