Music

with Mr Flynn

I had a parent tell me the other day that their child was really enjoying music classes. They said, whatever you are doing, keep doing it.

Let me take you into a typical lesson in my day.

From the moment we come into my class, students are ready to have fun. We often sing songs at the start of the lesson. Juniors will often sing silly songs, and we are currently working on “Riding on Golf Balls” and “The Pirate Song”, 2 great songs with actions for the kids to try. Seniors will often look at songs from artists which we study.  We are currently studying Taylor Swift, and so the last few songs have been her songs.

Then we move into our studies.  This term, it is ukulele and guitar.  I give the kids bite sized activities to work on.  We have been working on chords and individual notes across strings.  Some students have been looking at various strings and moving their fingers across them. This is difficult, but the students have got this!

Later in the term, we dabble in Drama activities. Students get to take the lead in plays and perform them to the class. They get to explore their creative side and learn to be confident performing around other students. The Prep students did the 3 Little Pigs this week. The Year 1 and 2 students looked at a variation of Jack and the Beanstalk.

We finish classes with games.  The Prep students played “Fish Party” last week where we needed a shark to wander through, looking for moving fish. We used a costume shark for this, and some students got to be a shark for the game.

Our games are often “Variations of Games”. This makes them interesting.  Limbo is replaced with Reverse Limbo, where the students have to hit the bar to move to the next level. The bar gets higher and students need to jump to do this. This turns into a big competition with students trying to jump the highest! (often a big challenge to basketball super-stars).

Our class moves through very quickly. My classes are crazy, but I am a strong believer that students who have fun will learn.
