Learning in Action
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our students for doing their best to manage the tricky week of NAPLAN. It can be a challenging experience and we were proud of everyone for trying to be resilient and persistent. We were impressed with the calm and focussed approach students had towards the testing. Well done Grade 3!
Literacy:
This fortnight, students have continued their novel study of ‘Matilda,’ exploring the main characters and using a Venn diagram to compare them. Focusing on identifying positive and negative adjectives used to describe these characters, students discussed how main characters don’t always have just positive characteristics, and how it can add to the story when the author gives them a few negative ones as well.
Grade 3 students have also been learning to identify nouns and verbs within a sentence, with the noun representing the ‘who’ and the verb representing the ‘what.’ Students then created their own sentences including a noun and verb, which they underlined to demonstrate their understanding.
In addition to this, students did a fantastic job completing the writing, reading and conventions of language NAPLAN assessments over the last two weeks.

Students will finalise their novel study in the next week, and revise the grammar learning that has taken place this term.
Maths:
As this fortnight had a number of interruptions due to holidays, in addition to preparing for NAPLAN, the class focus was to continue with decomposing and partitioning 3 and 4 digit numbers. To do this we used MAB to represent a 3 or 4 digit number in various ways. Students continued to work on their goals and develop fluency through Maths Masters. They have continued to develop their problem solving strategies through class hooks and games.
Students completed the applied unit on length by collating their data on the dinosaur footprints, and presenting it as a poster. We also began the topic of ‘data’ wherein students chose their own question and came up with four narrowed variables. They then surveyed the class to collect data, using tally marks. After being introduced to different types of graphs, students designed a column graph to represent their data and included the different components needed to create their graph.

We will conclude the term with a post-test on place value, activities, games and problem solving to consolidate their learning.
Inquiry
This fortnight students have been working in small groups to create a game/sport that is inclusive for people with a disability to play. The Year 3s have implemented their knowledge on how they can modify rules to create a fair and equitable game, adjust equipment and design suitable playing fields/environments to cater to people with a range of disablilites.

Students will conclude the term with a reflection on their learning throughout this unit. Students will be able to share and showcase the game they have created with their families on Celebration morning.
Wellbeing
This fortnight we enjoyed delving into what makes good friendships and also what can go wrong in them. Using the Friend-O -Meter, students identified the difference between healthy & unhealthy friendships and the impact that body language has on our friendships. Students discussed how to resolve conflict with a friend through how to respond to both a positive and negative reaction when they might have a Friendship Fire, plus practised giving a genuine apology.
We also focussed on Harmony Day on March 21 and spoke about the importance of celebrating cultural diversity among all Australians.
Exciting times ahead in STEM!
We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.
Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.
Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
Opportunities to help:
- Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
- If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
- If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
- If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
- Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
