Learning in Action

Wellbeing

Learning in Action:

As we continue to delve into the Emotional Literacy component of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program, students were tasked with recognising and identifying their own emotions and the corresponding events that evoke these emotions. This has been a rich discussion across all Grade 1 classrooms, generating conversations about what experiences trigger particular emotions. For example, having your friend run off on you can have you feeling sad and frustrated, or having a group of friends not wanting to partake in the same game as you can leave one feeling angry or excluded. These “tricky situations” along with many others were discussed and categorised into the strong emotions that they conjure. How to manage these emotions became the overarching theme of the fortnight, especially with some of the challenges some of our students are having in the yard.

Upstander award:

To recognise students that support others, the Grade One teachers would like to introduce our new award, ‘The Upstanders Award’. Being a recipient of the Upstanders Award means that you have displayed not only our school values but are also a person who goes against the tide and will support a student or students during a “tricky situation”. This might look like, asking a student to stop being rude or using unkind words, or it might include helping someone in the yard who is visibly upset. However, most importantly, an Upstander is someone who consistently demonstrates these principles in a calm manner.

Our Upstander meeting is held each fortnight, the opposing week to Circles. The three very well-deserving Upstander Award recipients for Week 7 were:

Amalee (1I), James (1PR) and Charlie (1A).

Well done to these students! We look forward to announcing next fortnight's Upstander Award winners.

Literacy

Learning in Action:

In the last fortnight, students have started looking at digraphs including /sh/, /ph/, /ch/, /ng/ and /th/. The students have gone on word hunts, practised decoding strategies and tried to include words that have these digraphs in their writing.

We have also started applying all our knowledge around narratives to create our own stories. The students were asked to think about an idea and then follow the writing process to create a narrative. Students will publish these next week.

Preview for Learning:

Next term, we will be focusing on informative texts, letters and procedures. Students will also continue looking at digraphs as well as long vowel sounds in our whole class reading lessons. Students will continue working on their personal goals.

Maths

Learning in Action:

This fortnight, students in grade 1 learnt how the position of a digit in a number changes its value and focused on putting numbers in ascending order. We also learnt how numbers can be represented in different ways but still have the same value. For example, 32 can be made up of 3 tens and 2 ones but can also be made up of 32 ones or 2 tens and 12 ones. Students also continued their data unit by developing a question and recording their peers' responses using tally marks.

Preview for Learning:

Next term in Maths we will be learning about addition as well as begin our location and transformation topic. Students will also continue working towards individual maths goals.

Inquiry

Learning in Action:

This fortnight students have continued to reflect on the key questions we have explored through our investigation of rules:

  • Are rules always the same?
  • Why do we have rules?
  • How did you show honesty/fairness?

Students have enjoyed putting their learning and understanding of rules into action in two very different situations. We read a picture storybook and engaged in creative play in our Curious Corner to reflect on the importance of rules, how rules can be different in different situations and how rules are not always ‘black and white’.

Preview for Learning:

Our Inquiry topic next term will be ‘Geography’. We will be learning all about significant man-made and natural places in our local community.

Message from STEM:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Thank you for your continued support,
