Learning in Action
Literacy:
In Reading, students were introduced to fables to build upon their listening comprehension and oral language skills. Students retold the fables and answered questions with a partner. Students contributed their ideas to help write a class fable. We also continued to work on our decoding skills this fortnight by sounding out 2-3 letter ‘s-a-t-p-i-n’ words. Students engaged in rotational activities such as listening to the beginning sounds, writing three-letter words and rainbow handwriting to consolidate their skills. Through writing, students learnt about verbs (an action). Students identified a subject in a picture and stated what it was doing e.g. The boy is playing the guitar. Students developed their understanding of a sentence, knowing it contains a subject and verb group. Students collaborated with a partner to verbally construct simple sentences.
Preview - Students will revise ‘s-a-t-p-i-n’ sounds and practise reading and writing words. Students will choose their favourite fable to illustrate.
Maths:
Over the past fortnight, students have learnt about the numbers 4 and 5. Students enjoyed representing the number in tally marks, on a die, tens frame, as a word and noticing where we see this number in the real world, for example, a car has 4 wheels.
Students have also started learning about comparing and ordering numbers. Students have learnt the concepts of ‘more’ and less’ and the numbers ‘before’ and ‘after’. We have finished our shape unit and started a new unit on data. Students have been answering yes or no questions and learnt to ask questions to others, for example, is your favourite animal a lion or a monkey?
Preview- Next fortnight we will continue to focus on the numbers 1-10 and continue our data unit, focusing on asking and answering questions.
Inquiry:
This fortnight we discussed learning to recognise our personal strengths and things we are good at. Students drew a picture of something they were good at and shared this with the class. It is great for students to understand that we have our own personal strengths and to celebrate them. We also learnt about what makes a good friend and read the story of the ‘Rainbow Fish’. We discussed what it means to be a ‘good friend’. As a class we decided kindness, sharing, trust and respect are all very important qualities of a good friend. The class created a collage of ‘Rainbow fish’ with their very own special silver scale. Prep students also revised all the learning we have this year in Inquiry and created a poster to share on celebration morning.
Preview-Finish our ‘I’m an LPS Kid’ unit and host our Celebration morning.
Wellbeing:
In 4R’s this term we have covered the topics of Emotional Literacy, knowing what different emotions look like, feel like and sound like, and personal strengths. The past fortnight we finished the term by illustrating our emotions. Last week, Preps had their first ever Circles session! In this session, students met their Circles teacher and group. They enjoyed getting to know one another, discussed a group name, created a secret handshake and played games.
Teddy Bear Day
What a joy students had celebrating teddy bear day! We spent the day doing various activities including building a bed for our teddies, engaging in a STEM challenge and making teddy bear headbands. Enjoying a teddy bear picnic with families was a lovely way to conclude our fun-filled day.
Exciting times ahead in STEM!
We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.
Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.
Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
Opportunities to help:
- Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
- If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
- If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
- If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
- Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
