What's Happening in Grade 6? 

English:

This term we will be exploring discussion texts. Students will be learning about the structure and language features of discussion texts and will use high modality words and supportive evidence for our arguments and counter arguments.  We will cover a variety of interesting topics and have in depth discussions for and against on topics such as, should E Scooters be banned, should we become a cashless society, fast fashion and whether screen time is a growing problem.  

Mathematics:

The students will be continuing their learning on decimals. Students will be learning about fractions and will compare and order fractions.  They will add and subtract fractions with the same and unlike denominators and find fractions of a collection. They will make connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. Students will also explore length and use centimetres, millimetres and metres to measure items in the classroom and outdoors. They will be learning to identify a variety of graphs and to interpret displayed data as well as write their own statements of findings. Students will also be exploring, comparing and converting time and will be working with 24 hour times.   

Inquiry:

The Grade 6 students will be learning about the three levels of Government, the electoral process, the Constitution, how laws are passed and democracy.  The students will showcase their learning and understanding of our inquiry topic through a range of written, recorded and visual presentations.  An interactive online incursion is planned through ‘Parliament of Victoria’ in which students will discover how an idea can become a new law. An excursion to the Victorian Parliament and the Old Treasury Building will take place on Thursday 29th of May where a tour guide will take the students through Parliament and the Treasury building. 

We are looking forward to an exciting term 2 in the Grade 6 classrooms.
