Year 4 News

It has been a busy start to Term 2, and we are thrilled to report that the students have adjusted well to the new activities and learning opportunities!

Maths

This term, we have been focusing on multiplication and times table facts. Students are practising multi-digit multiplication, including calculations with larger numbers and money.

They have also revisited how to calculate the area of rectangular shapes, using their multiplication skills to solve problems involving square units. Additionally, students have refreshed their knowledge of grid references as we prepare to enhance our mapping skills.

Literacy

In literacy, students are developing their reading comprehension skills through written responses to both direct and inferred questions. They are accessing a variety of texts and videos related to our current unit of inquiry, which is helping them improve their research and note-taking skills.

To promote greater engagement in writing, we have given students the freedom to choose their writing topics from the May writing choice calendar, allowing them to explore their interests.

Passion Project

Students have commenced working on a self-directed project driven by their personal interests. Each student has created a driving question and is currently in the research phase of their project. They will have the freedom to choose how they want to communicate their expertise, whether through a poster, performance, diorama, video, or audio presentation. This initiative encourages creativity and allows students to explore topics they are passionate about.

Inquiry

We have commenced our "How We Organise Ourselves" unit, which integrates literacy, maths, and geography. The central idea is: “Environment, geography, cultures, and histories shape communities.”

So far, students have learned about the geography and peoples of South America, including the four layers of the rainforest (emergent layer, canopy, understorey, and forest floor), the Amazon rainforest, deforestation, and the Amazon River.

Sport

During Year 4 sport, we have continued playing rounders, and we are seeing impressive improvements in teamwork and sportsmanship among the students. It is wonderful to witness their growth not only in skills but also in collaboration with their peers.
