Unit of Inquiry
Where We Are in Place and Time
Central Idea: Cultures Change Over Time
We’ve launched into our new Unit of Inquiry; it’s already been an exciting and engaging start! A highlight so far has been our School Scavenger Hunt, where students used a map of the school to locate 10 clues. Working collaboratively in groups, each team appointed a map reader responsible for navigating and making decisions. Once all the clues were found, the completed sheet revealed interesting facts and information about the First Nations Peoples of Australia.
In addition, we’ve begun researching the states and territories of Australia. Students have been working in groups to explore key details such as capital cities, significant landmarks, population data, and fun facts, using a range of online sources. They’ve also been developing their map skills by identifying and labelling the locations of each state and capital city on a map of Australia. This unit has sparked a lot of curiosity and enthusiasm, and the students are especially looking forward to our upcoming Didgeridoo Australia incursion later this week!
Year 3 Sport
Capture the Chicken!
Our Year 3 Thursday afternoon sport sessions are off to a fantastic start! The students have shown off their competitive spirit in our whole-year-level “Capture the Chicken” games. It’s been a joy to see all three classes come together for some friendly competition, with students developing clever strategies and working as a team.
Each week brings a new level of excitement as we wait to see which class will come out on top. With 3B currently in the lead, the big question is: will 3A or 3C claim victory this week?
Maths
Subtraction Wrap Up & Introducing Multiplication and Division
We’ve recently wrapped up our subtraction unit, and we’re incredibly proud of the students’ hard work and persistence throughout. They showed great dedication in building their understanding and applying different subtraction strategies.
We have now moved on to our new unit on multiplication, where students are building on their skills with arrays and deepening their understanding of the connection between multiplication and division. As the unit progresses, they’ll be working towards becoming more fluent with multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5, and 10.
Our young mathematicians have been busy getting hands-on with mass recently! From basketballs to pencils, students have been estimating, weighing, and ordering objects from lightest to heaviest. Using analogue scales (just like the ones in grandma’s kitchen!), they’ve been learning how to read measurements like experts. This practical approach has made maths feel real and fun, while helping build their confidence in understanding how mass works in everyday life.
Joined Handwriting
We have recently begun learning joined handwriting, and the students have jumped in with great enthusiasm! Each week, they’ve been practising forming clear, consistent letters and learning to connect them smoothly using diagonal joins. Right now, we’re keeping it simple, just two letters at a time, as we lay the groundwork for more fluent writing.
The students are showing great perseverance and attention to detail as they refine their technique. We’re looking forward to seeing how their skills develop as we continue to practise throughout the term.
