Year 2 News

Welcome back to Term 2!
Two Truths and a Lie
We were so excited to welcome the children back to school for a fun and exciting term. On the first day back, the classrooms were a buzz and the children were full of stories and news from their Easter break and the holidays.
The students had a lot of fun coming up with two truths and a lie about their holiday. We were so impressed with their creativity, and the believable and realistic lies they came up with. It made it hard to guess which facts were true and which were made up!
ANZAC Day
We understand that ANZAC Day can be a challenging idea for 7 and 8 year olds to understand and so read some stories and had a discussion about what ANZAC Day means.
We were extremely surprised and impressed with the insightful comments the children made after listening to the stories and during our discussion. Well done Year 2s on your maturity and empathy, we are very proud of you!
Telling the Time
At the start of Term 2 we continued to learn about telling the time. Students were reminded about o’clock and half past and have learnt the new times of ‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’. Telling the time, especially on an analogue clock, is a challenging task for Year 2 students. Students often find the ‘quarter to’ time particularly challenging as 2:45pm is a ‘quarter to 3’! We encourage you to continue to practice telling the time at home as much as possible to help reinforce our learning at school.
We all had a lot of fun making some clocks, which have special ‘lift the flap’ numbers to help us learn the trickier times. Underneath each number from 1 – 12, the corresponding digital time and written phrases we use for each number can be found.
Please also continue to use the attached online clock to help consolidate this knowledge: https://www.visnos.com/demos/clock
Please also continue to encourage your children to work on Manga High at home. All students’ passwords were sent home in Term 1.
This term we will be focusing on addition and learning different strategies to use when completing addition problems.
We will also be learning about statistics and how to read various graphs and data displays.
Who We Are
We have had a wonderful start to Term 2 exploring our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘Who we are’. The Central Idea, ‘A balanced lifestyle is influenced by the choices people make’ has been considered as we have taken part in a variety of activities which are positive for both our bodies and mind. We have spoken about the importance of keeping balance in our lives and that too much of any one thing isn’t good for you. We have tried various relaxation and mindfulness techniques, gone for a bush walk, experienced the effects of exercise on our bodies through running, dance and aerobics and learnt about the different nutrients a rainbow of fruits and vegetables provides.
We had fun making our own ‘rainbow of fruits and vegetables’ and have proudly displayed this in the window of 2B. Please come and have a look and celebrate your child’s learning. As we move towards the end of the unit, the children will have the opportunity to research a sport, survey their class about their chosen sport and present their findings in an oral presentation.
Narrative Writing
This Term, we have developed our knowledge about narrative writing. We spent three days focusing on Bold Beginnings, Mighty Middles and Excellent Endings. We were so proud of some of the creative ideas the children came up with. We were impressed when the students selected interesting bullseye words, remembered their capital letters and full stops!
Please see the posters the children have studied for each component of a narrative writing piece and perhaps ask them to share with you what type of Bold Beginning or Excellent Ending they used in their own narrative.
