Year 6 News

What a great start to the term! The students have truly settled into the Year 6 space and mindset. The Year 6 teachers would like to commend the students on an excellent start to the term.
Literacy
Over the past few weeks, the Year 6 students have been combining their knowledge of sentence structure and vocabulary to create more sophisticated writing. By using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to join clauses, they have transformed simple sentences into compound and complex ones.
Our reading focus also supports their writing development by helping them compile a bank of unfamiliar words and terminology taken directly from the texts.
Mathematics
During our maths lessons, the classes have been revisiting fractions and the various types we encounter. Using their knowledge of factors and multiples, the children have been matching equivalent and similar fractions.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
Jumping straight into the term, the Year 6 students led their first major whole-school event—the ANZAC Day Ceremony. Half the cohort made their debut whole-school presentations, while the other half helped usher the rest of the school. Every parent and teacher were blown away, setting a high standard for the rest of the year!
Please enjoy some recounts from a few students:
On Thursday the 24 April the year sixes had there ANZAC remembrance service. 6A and half of 6B presented poems, story's about loved ones and historical recounts, while the other half of 6B and 6C were ushers for the younger year levels.
When the last post played the flag monitors slowly raised the Australian flag. It was a really memorable service, and the year sixes did well. We had a special guest Grant who told a wonderful story about the Turkish soldiers.

Inquiry
Continuing with the performing mindset, during our unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time, the students have been researching an Australian topic of their choice. Using the information to create an eye catchy and knowledge-filled information report.
The unit of inquiry for Year 6 students this term is, Where we are in place and time. Our central idea is Present day cultures are influenced by past cultures. We have been learning about historical events and how they have impacted the Australia of today.
Each student researched an event of their choice and wrote an information report about it. We then got into small groups with people who researched the same topic as us and worked collaboratively to plan and write a script for a short play. We will be sharing our knowledge and performing our plays for the Year 3 students on Friday.
