Senior School News Yr 5/6

Mr Tom Brophy (5/6B), Miss Carrie Kudelka (5/6K) & Miss Chelsea Perrin (5/6P)

Only 2 weeks to go before we’re on the home stretch for 2024! Our 5/6s have been exceptionally busy as of late, wrapping up units in Literacy and Numeracy, undertaking many rehearsals and tasks in preparation for the upcoming ‘Madagascar’ musical in Week 10 (make sure you’ve bought your tickets for Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th or your video copy!), and off on many excursions to Richmond and Lysterfield, furthering their Inquiry and RE studies.

Literacy

Students have been delving deeper into their narrative writing over the last few weeks, looking specifically at the strategies of ‘Show, Don’t Tell’, ‘Moment of Change’ and ‘Tightening Tension’. Continuing their practice out of the classroom for homework, 5/6s have been utilising a creative writing grid, honing their skills with many fun prompts. They have also been focused on eye-catching presentations made with a mixture of technology and craft. Using the Olympics as our inspiration, students have been brainstorming ways to utilise technology to future proof and improve their sport of choice. We can’t wait to see the finished products in a couple of weeks.

Numeracy

We have successfully wrapped up another unit recently in Measurement. Students wowed us with their final projects, creating some incredibly creative floor plans for their ‘Dream Homes’ and supporting them with accurate measurements and calculations. We have quite a few future architects on our hands!

Having now moved on to Chance and Probability, last week the 5/6s estimated and calculated the theoretical probability of certain chocolates in a box of Favourites (with quite a few sweet treats given out along the way).

Madagascar

Only 14 days until Madagascar - the countdown is on! Students have been hard at work with some sort of rehearsal almost everyday, their willingness to sacrifice lunchtimes appreciated immensely. With little time left, our cast have been knuckling down and getting into the nitty gritty of characterisation and performance. Excitement and nerves are beginning to escalate with much eagerness in the air. On Monday, we finalised some costumes with students tie-dying t-shirts for their ‘Grand Central / Raspberry Clouds’ song and dance. These will be mementoes for all Senior School students to remember the show by once performances are complete, able to keep and rewear for years to come.

MCG Excursion

We were fortunate enough to hit the MCG last week for a deeper dive into how technology has and continues to evolve in the world of sports. After a quick walk down the Anniversary Trail and a speedy train trip from East Camberwell Station, we arrived at the MCG on a sunny spring day. Students were lucky enough to undertake a tour of the entire MCG and Sports Museum with one of the many knowledgeable volunteers, taken from the top of Level 4 to the underground changerooms and everywhere in between. Next, they got the opportunity to meet and question former Olympic diver, Jenny Donnet. Students listened to her story, from starting the sport as a young child to competing in 4 Olympic Games during the 1980s and 90s, as well as to her current coaching career. Lastly, they had the chance to get involved in many fun and interactive activities at Game On! These games were a combination of technology and sport, testing student reflexes, aim and speed. During their breaks, we also had time to play some Markers Up on the surrounding grounds (not quite on the hallowed turf, but close enough…).
