We have started this year to use a new writing program from Years 2-6 and have used some elements in Prep and Year 1. VCOP, which stands for Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, and Punctuation, is crucial in enhancing writing skills as it provides a structured approach to developing well-rounded and effective writing. By focusing on Vocabulary, writers expand their word choice, adding precision and variety to their expressions. Connectives help in linking ideas cohesively, ensuring the text flows logically and smoothly. Openers create engaging beginnings, capturing readers' attention and setting the tone for the content. Proper Punctuation clarifies meaning and improves readability, guiding the reader through the writer’s thoughts. Emphasizing VCOP in writing not only enriches the quality of the work but also supports clearer communication and a more engaging reading experience.
We have seen steady improvement in writing across the year, with students being provided with regular individualised feedback, as well as a clear marking rubric to help them know what is missing in their writing. VCOP marking is an essential practice in the writing process as it provides targeted feedback to help writers improve their skills systematically. By evaluating and marking aspects related to Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, and Punctuation, educators can identify specific areas where students excel or need improvement. This focused feedback helps students understand their strengths and areas for growth, guiding them in refining their writing techniques. For instance, highlighting strong vocabulary choices can encourage more descriptive language, while marking effective connectives can illustrate how to better link ideas. By systematically addressing each component of VCOP, marking not only enhances individual writing but also fosters overall improvement in writing proficiency.
We look forward to seeing the improvement across the College in the coming years.
