Introducing Lumin Sports for athlete management
As we approach the critical end of the winter sports season, many of our athletes will be competing for finals spots. During this period, the wellbeing of our athletes is our highest priority. To support this, the Sports Excellence Program has committed to using an athlete management software called Lumin Sports (Arc Mobile on mobile devices).
Lumin is a data visualisation platform designed to help decision-makers in sports interpret complex data. It is currently used by the Australian Olympic Team as well as several AFL, NRL and netball clubs to manage athletes.
Lumin will help us proactively manage the wellbeing of our school's athletes, with the aim of minimising feelings of burnout and stress as they balance school life with their sporting commitments. Each morning at 8am, athletes will complete a 60-second daily wellbeing survey to provide us with a snapshot of their lives over the past 24 hours.
The questions cover time in bed, sleep quality, motivation, soreness, mood and stress levels. The more consistently our athletes complete this data, the better the app will perform. If an athlete's check-in shows a marker that is one standard deviation below their average, I will receive an email to follow up with the athlete to determine if it is a one-off event or the result of multiple stressors.
An example of this is students' sleep data from the previous week. Using Lumin, we’ve been able to flag with our students potential decreases in their performance owing to inconsistent sleep routines due to the Olympics. While this is okay as a once-off, students have been able to see the effect sleep has had on the other health markers over a number of days.
Another key feature of the app is the injury status check, which is the final question in the wellbeing survey. This helps us plan and address any issues before the student arrives for training. Athletes can select one of the following options:
- Green (low pain): For instances of general soreness, we can modify the student's program for that day.
- Orange (moderate pain): These instances will be addressed by Jamie Tarrant, our Sports Scientist, who will conduct an on-site assessment and modify the student's program as required.
- Red (severe pain): The athlete will seek external help and support from a specialist.
All of our students' testing data will be stored in the app, allowing them to share it with coaches and parents.
