Competition Success!
Victorian School Music Festival
Both the Junior School Performance Choir and Girton Singers had a wonderful time at the Victorian School Music Festival, which was held in Melbourne on 5 and 6 August.
The Performance Choir was awarded Platinum for their performance. They were lauded for their discipline, pure and clear sound, and superior storytelling ability. Girton Singers was awarded Gold, with their rich sound and complex repertoire setting them apart. Special thanks go to Audrey Jackson, Eliza Jackson-Sloane and Ruby O’Shea, who stepped up to do solo performances when other students fell ill.
Both choirs were beautifully supported by Ms Belinda Moon, our fabulous pianist. We encourage everyone to come to the Ensembles Concerts to hear these and other wonderful ensembles.

Debaters Association of Victoria Competition
On Wednesday 7 August, Girton hosted the final rounds of the Debaters Association of Victoria regional competition. Teams competed from Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Weeroona College and Girton. There were some wins and some losses, but the most important news to report is that Girton has very fine young people in our Debating co-curricular who are growing in confidence and skill, and building a supportive community from Years 7 to 12.
This year, our students showcased their exceptional oratory and critical-thinking skills throughout the multiple competition rounds held in Bendigo. The series saw rigorous debates on diverse topics, with our teams demonstrating outstanding preparation, poise and persuasive arguments. Many of our junior teams won their debates and will potentially progress to the state finals. The mentorship of our senior students was exceptional.
Special accolades were given to individuals for the best speaker. This achievement reflects our commitment to fostering intellectual growth and public speaking prowess. Congratulations to all participants for their dedication and hard work!

Science and Engineering Challenge
On Thursday 8 August, our school hosted the annual Science and Engineering Challenge in the gymnasium, with Girton placing second.
Students enjoyed an exhilarating day competing against other schools in fun and engaging hands-on activities, such as designing an earthquake-proof tower, building a hovercraft or bridge, providing electricity to a city, or creating an environmentally friendly house.
Each school team was divided into eight groups, with between two and four students per group. Points were awarded based on each group's performance, with the school that accumulated the highest point score at the end of the day declared the winner. Qualifying schools will go on to compete at the state final, with eight winning schools from around Australia invited to compete at the national final.
