Reading

We have been learning about author's purpose focusing on texts told through Indigenous perspectives in Reading. We are continuing to summarise our reading and make connections to the texts we are reading.

Writing

In Writing, we have been completing our fantasy fiction texts. Students have worked hard to finalise and publish their work and have produced some amazing stories. We learned about the writing process including first draft, editing and final copies.

DISCOVERY AFTERNOON!

STEM Excursion

Our Excursion To the University Of Melbourne

Our excursion to The University of Melbourne was really fun and we all had a good time. It occurred on the 18th of September on a Wednesday. We did 5 different activities. We did Virtual Reality (VR), Liquid Nitrogen, Mini Teachers, Looking at Spiders and Ants and looking at different Electron Microscopes .

Smashing flowers with Hamish

During the liquid nitrogen activity, which was with Dr Hamish Brown, we wore lab coats and goggles. There were flowers to dip in the liquid nitrogen and we smashed the flowers with a hammer. We saw how they freeze specimens and we did it as well but with a flower petal. We were really honoured to be able to experience these things.

Mini Teachers with Serge

We also used photos of Mrs Lytton, Mr Lytton and Mrs Crane and edited them. They were called mini teachers.  We did that with Professor Sergey Rubanov. It was soooo fun and we all enjoyed it.

Looking at close up of Animals and Particles with Dr Phuc

At the University of Melbourne, one of the professor's names was Dr  Phuc Le . Phuc taught us about the close ups with spiders, ants, pollen etc. The close ups really showed how different these things are up close. This is very fun and educational. I learnt many things just from a close. This subject really taught me something new that I would think I’d never know. Thank you to the University of Melbourne for teaching us something new.

Looking at the Electron Microscopes with Dr Sepideh

At the University of Melbourne, one of the professor’s names was Sepideh Valimehr. Sepideh took us on a tour to see the multi million dollar electron microscopes. We saw a 4 metre tall microscope that really surprised us. Also Sepideh showed us a small plastic thing that we didn’t think too much of but found out all the bumps and interesting things hiding in it. Thank you to the University of Melbourne for teaching us something new.

Virtual Reality with Eric

During the VR (Virtual Reality) at The University of Melbourne, we explored what it would be like to be inside a molecule. It was very fun and fascinating, even though some of us got a bit of vertigo! There were two VR activities, including fitting an atom inside an air molecule and matching up the molecules. With us for that activity was Professor Eric Hanssen, the leading professor in the Electron Microscope area of The Ian Holmes Imaging Centre. As well as organising the whole excursion, he made the activities both entertaining and interesting. We learnt a lot, including how Electron Microscopes work and what everything on our planet is made up of. In conclusion, our excursion to The University of Melbourne was very educational, exciting and entertaining.
