Kindergarten

A message from Early Stage 1

A big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who have been reading with students in Kindergarten.

English

We are learning to:

  • hear and say the sounds /kw/, /ee/ and /z/
  • recognise that two letters making one sound are called digraphs:
    • ‘qu’ makes the sound /kw/
    • ‘ee’ makes the sound /ee/ as in ‘seen’
    • ‘zz’ makes the sound /z/
  • read tricky words: go, so, no, this, then
  • write a simple sentence containing a subject and a verb
  • identify the subject and verb in simple sentences

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  • take away a smaller number from the larger number to model subtraction
  • use different strategies we have learnt to solve addition and subtraction word problems
  • directly compare two objects’ masses by hefting
  • describe the difference between the size and mass of an object
  • describe, name and make: circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.

Integrated Learning

We are learning to:

  • understand that maps can be used to find your way around places
  • construct a simple map to represent a place and spaces within it
  • locate important places on maps.

Personal Development and Health (PDH)

We are learning to:

  • recognise emotional responses that could indicate unsafe situations
  • recognise appropriate touch and explore how to respond to inappropriate touch.

Visual Arts

We are learning:

  • about the artist Piet Mondrian and some of his artworks
  • to create maps of special people, places and events through visual representations
  • to use colour, line and shape to add detail and emotion to our artworks.

Reminders

  • make sure you are returning your readers each week
  • please leave all special toys at home
