Asthma

What is asthma?

Asthma is a medical condition that affects the airways (the breathing tubes that carry air into our lungs). From time to time, people with asthma find it harder to breathe in and out, because the airways in their lungs become narrower – like trying to breathe through a thin straw.

At other times their breathing is normal.

There is no cure for asthma, but it can usually be well controlled. Most people with asthma can stay active and have a healthy life.

For good control of asthma, you need:

  • medicines – taken the right way, at the right time
  • regular medical visits for check-ups and to learn more about living with asthma
  • an action plan, so you know exactly what to do when symptoms happen.

Parents must provide the school with an Asthma Action Plan completed by the student’s medical practitioner. The plan must outline the student’s known triggers and the emergency procedures to be taken in the event of an asthma flare-up or attack.

The Asthma Action Plan should be reviewed and completed at least annually, or after a flare-up, when symptoms or treatment changes, for each student with asthma and contain:

  • The prescribed medication taken and when it is to be administered (e.g. on a regular basis; as premedication to exercise; if the student is experiencing symptoms)
  • Emergency contact details
  • Contact details of the student’s medical/health practitioner
  • Details about deteriorating asthma including: signs to recognise worsening symptoms; what to do during an attack and medication to be used

AUSTRALIA RECOMMENDS ALL STUDENTS WITH ASTHMA PROVIDE AN UPDATED ASTHMA ACTION PLAN AT LEAST ANNUALLY

Compass Tips

Contacting teachers - Teachers can be contacted via Compass through the Parent Portal, which is found on the homepage of the website. If you are using a phone app to access Compass, you will need to click on the "More" button on the lower right of the page, then select "Open in Browser".

In the Parent Portal, underneath each student's name, there is an option to email the student's teachers. This will send an email to all of the student's teachers including their main teacher as well as the specialists, so click the red cross on the right to remove the teachers you do not need to email. Any replies will come directly to the parent's email.

Events - When accepting an event and providing consent in Compass, you will need to type the parent/guardian name to provide consent in the section just below the event information.  You will not be able to select a payment type unless the consent has been provided.

Further information can be accessed via A guide for parents & families (compass.education).

If you have any questions, please speak with the Office.

Late Arrival/Absences

If your child arrives late or departs early, a parent/guardian must present to the school office to sign their child in/out on the Compass kiosk and a late/early leave pass will be provided.

When notifying the school of a full day absence, we ask you to please do so via Compass.

If you are collecting your child from First Aid, office staff will sign your child out on your behalf.
