Olden Days Celebration in Year 1

During Term 4 in our General Studies unit, we have been learning about history, in particular the differences between the past and the present.  Students brought in special family heirlooms to share with their peers.  We also learnt about a range of things from the olden days including toys, technology, fashion, and how different school was, and compared them to what we have in the present.

On Tuesday the 31st of October the Year 1’s held an Olden Day dress-up day to celebrate our learning.  We wore clothes from the olden days and participated in different activities that students may have participated in back then.  We started off the day learning about the strict school rules and how to show respect to our teachers.

Throughout the day we took part in a range of activities including:

  • a cursive handwriting lesson with chalk
  • olden day board games (for example, hooky, chess, checkers, pick up sticks)
  • Olden Day outside games for sports (for example, marbles, elastics, ribbons, skipping)
  • Making a thaumatrope
  • Trying scones with jam and cream.

It was a great way to celebrate our learning and students really enjoyed pretending to be back in time.
