On Wednesday the 6th of December during lunchtime, Mr Seedman and Ms Tedeschi organised a debate between teachers and students on whether Nuclear Power should be adopted in Australia, with students advocating for nuclear energy.
Students secured the upper hand early in the debate. With a projection of memes at their disposal, students advocated for the sustainable benefits of nuclear energy in comparison to the use of fossil fuels. Of note was the guarantee of job creation and long operational lifespan of nuclear energy; a facet which was sorely missing from the defence.
On the other side of the debate, teachers highlighted the deleterious effects of nuclear energy through events such as the Chernobyl disaster (1986) and the adverse risks of nuclear waste to human health. The defence also noted the costly nature of setting up nuclear energy in Australia, given its previous dependency on fossil fuels. The defence was not unwilling to get their hands dirty either, commenting on students’ lack of hygiene as a prime indicator of their unreliability.
The results were close (and contentious) to say the least, but teachers Mr. Russel, Mr Lawrence and Mr Givens-Lamb inevitably secured bragging rights. A special shout out goes to Heathmont College Debate Team members, Jacob Morrison-Broughan, Felix Li, Griffin Hamilton, Lewi Wall, Milly Wyrostek and Patrick Rees for their ongoing curiosity for debating. On behalf of Mr Seedman and Ms Tedeschi, it has been an absolute joy to see you all grow into the charismatic, confident, and poised lawyers you already are in our eyes!
