Athletics Carnival 2026: A Fantastic Day of House Spirit and Teamwork

Last Friday, our Newlands community came together for a fantastic Athletics Carnival at Coburg Harriers Athletic Club. It was a wonderful day full of running, jumping, throwing, cheering, teamwork and House spirit.
A huge congratulations to all students from Prep to Year 6 for the way they participated throughout the day. It was great to see so many students trying their best, supporting each other and showing excellent sportsmanship.
A special mention goes to our Prep students, who experienced their very first Newlands Athletics Carnival. They did an amazing job joining in with the activities, cheering for their Houses and being part of such a big school event for the first time. We hope this is the first of many happy Athletics Carnival memories for them.
Thank you also to our staff and parent helpers. A whole-school event like this takes a huge amount of organisation and support, and the day simply would not have been possible without everyone helping with events, recording results, handing out ribbons, supporting students and keeping the day running smoothly.
The final House results were incredibly exciting. In 5th place was Birrarung Salvia with 231 points, in 4th place was Kurrum Malva with 261.5 points, in 3rd place was Edgars Carmín with 318.5 points, and in 2nd place was Merri Merri Ámbar with 341 points.
Congratulations to Darebin Celeste, our 2026 Athletics Carnival winners, with 348 points. It was a very close result, with only 7 points between first and second place, showing that every race, every jump, every throw and every House point really counted.
We would also like to congratulate the students who qualified for District Athletics. This is a fantastic achievement, and we know they will represent Newlands with pride on Tuesday 18th August (week 6). We wish them the very best of luck.
Well done to everyone involved in making the Athletics Carnival such a successful and memorable day.
¡Vamos Newlands!
