This term in Visual Art students are exploring a range of exciting artistic techniques while learning about the history, purpose and cultural significance of different art forms.

Foundation - Collaborative Artworks

This term, our Foundation students are working towards some collaborative art pieces. There are many examples of this happening in the art world, combining two different mediums from two artists, or both working on the same piece. So far, we have each taken a piece of a puzzle and coloured it in our own way, putting all 44 pieces together to create a huge rainbow display! We will continue to creare insieme using paint, colour and print all this term!

Year 1/2 – Printmaking

Our Year 1/2 students are discovering the fascinating world of printmaking. They will design and create their own printing stamp after experimenting with repeating patterns and colour and composition. Along the way, students are also learning about the history of printing, from early printing methods through to the invention of printing presses and how these transformed the way information and art were shared around the world.

Year 3/4 – Medieval illuminated manuscripts

Year 3/4 students are travelling back in time as they explore the world of medieval illuminated manuscripts. Inspired by the decorated pages created hundreds of years ago - and from the pages in Shrek! - , students have been designing and creating their own illuminated manuscript page. Their artwork incorporates decorative borders, intricate patterns, vibrant colours and gold details.

Year 5/6 – Magazine Collage

Our Year 5/6 students are creating collages. Using recycled magazines, they will carefully select, cut and arrange images to create artworks that focuses on social justice (‘giustizia sociale’). Throughout the unit, students will develop their skills in composition, colour, texture and visual storytelling while discovering how contemporary artists use collage to express creative ideas.

What you can do at home

Here are some simple ways to support your child's artistic learning:

• Colour, draw or paint together (insieme). Notice how we can share ideas and make new combinations when we collaborate!
• Encourage your child to notice patterns, textures and colours in everyday life and talk about how artists might use them
• Collect magazines and newspapers
• Visit your local library and explore books about art, history or famous artists
• Provide opportunities for drawing, colouring, cutting, gluing or creating with simple household materials
• If you come across printing, decorative lettering or collage in books, museums, advertisements or around your community, encourage your child to point them out and discuss what they notice
