Year 5/6

Term 3 is off to a fantastic start! Our Year 5/6 students have been busy exploring a range of exciting learning experiences and activities across the curriculum.
In Mathematics, students have been learning to add and subtract fractions with related and unrelated denominators. They have been using a variety of visual representations to support their understanding, including fraction bars, length models, pie charts and other concrete materials to explain and justify their thinking.
In Literacy, students have been immersed in the wonderful world of poetry! In Reading, they have been exploring how poets use imagery, such as similes, metaphors and personification, as well as sound devices including rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia, to create meaning and engage readers. They have enjoyed analysing a range of poetry styles, including slam poetry, haikus, diamantes and more.
In Writing, students will be creating poems for the Poem Forest competition. This year's theme, Sounds of Country, will inspire students to draft, revise and publish poems that use figurative language to create mood and evoke emotion. In Italian, students are also exploring poetry by experimenting with a range of poetic styles and responding to creative prompts inspired by the natural world, artworks and more.
We look forward to sharing some of our students' wonderful poetry with you later this term!
How you can help at home
Everyday maths is everywhere! Next time you're out shopping, invite your child to help calculate percentage discounts or add up the total cost of items (for example, if bread costs $4.50 and milk costs $3.85). These real-life opportunities are a fun and practical way to build confidence with decimals, percentages and mental maths.
Carlton Road to Respect 5/6 Incursion
Last week we had an incursion from the Carlton football team, they were two wonderful people who taught us not to fall for stereotypes, to be upstanders if possible, and to be able to sit with our emotions.
First, we learned about being ok with our emotions, naming our feelings; and finding different strategies to help us calm down.
We also watched multiple videos starring different AFL and AFLW players; they talked about some comfortable and uncomfortable emotions they experience from day to day.
Next, they went through some fun and stimulating activities that taught us to be more thoughtful and to work as a team.
Another concept we explored was Values, which are things that we believe and care about, these can be within a group or just a personal thing.
We went through some players and learned about some stereotypes that held back and made them feel uncomfortable.
We played some more team building games, and too soon it was time to pack and say our goodbyes.
Overall, it was an amazing experience. We all felt very privileged to have these people with us.
Thank you!!!!!!!

5/6 Poetry Incursion
Last Tuesday, the 21st of July the 5/6 students had a very special Visitor, Lucy (Roo’s mum). She taught us about what it’s like being a poet and that good poets steal. We learnt that poets get inspired by other poems and other things in real life like flowers, wildlife and so much more. We got two pages with 4 poems (Front and back), and collected all the words that described an elephant. E.g. A word could have been “trunk”, which could be a tree trunk, but also an elephant's trunk. After we highlighted the words on the sheet of paper, we wrote a short poem on a piece of card, and then Lucy collected all our poem cards. The poems were shuffled and Lucy read them out loud. Everyone's short sentences became one big poem! In conclusion, everyone had a great time learning all about poetry.
Mabel
Italian Drama and confidence workshop
This workshop was a great opportunity and it was great fun.
We were learning how we can power our voice in different ways.
We were very fortunate to have Malcolm and Michele and they were supported by the University of Melbourne. We had a great time!
We began the workshop with a body and vocal warmup, trying different sounds
we can create with our voices.
One of the activities was saying our name, what we like and do a dance move EG: hi I am ........... and I love to ....... and then perform a gesture.
This event that the school provided was spectacular. Grazie Nancy this was an amazing experience we hope to have this again.
