What’s Coming Up in Careers at Boorowa Central
SES Youth Internship at Young
The NSW SES is excited to be running a Youth Internship Program in various locations across the state. Our local unit in Young is proud to be one of them.
This program is aimed at students from local secondary schools in Years 9 and 11, aged between 14 and 17. It’s a fantastic opportunity designed to provide students with:
- An understanding of the commitment required to be a member of a volunteer emergency service
- Experience in the various roles within the NSW SES
- Exposure to other emergency services within the local area
- Enhanced leadership skills and personal development
- Opportunities to build teamwork and practical skills
Topics covered during the 8-week program include:
- CPR, including the use of an AED
- Flood awareness
- First aid
- Hazard awareness
- Storm and water damage response
- Personal safety in volunteer services
- Communication, including radio use
- An introduction to local emergency services

University Pathways
Universities offer a wide range of higher education degrees (usually at Bachelor level or above) that prepare students for careers in areas such as teaching, health, engineering, business, science, the arts, law, and more.

However, it’s not the only option! If you prefer hands-on, practical learning, you might consider TAFE, an apprenticeship, or a traineeship – all of which can lead to successful, well-paid careers.

- ATARs are released in December

What is Early Entry?
Early Entry allows Year 12 students to receive a university offer before sitting final HSC exams. Many unis consider Year 11 results, school recommendations, and personal statements instead of waiting for ATARs.

- Offers are made between September and November
- Some offers are conditional on completing the HSC or meeting prerequisites

What Do Paramedics and Ambulance Officers Do?
- Respond to 000 emergency calls

- Stabilise and transport patients to hospital

- Support non-emergency patient transport
How Do You Become a Paramedic?
- Complete Year 12Recommended subjects: Biology, Chemistry, PDHPE, and Maths.
- Study a Bachelor of ParamedicineOffered at universities including:
- Charles Sturt University
- Western Sydney University
- University of Tasmania
- Victoria University(Usually 3 years full-time with practical placements)
- Register as a ParamedicMust register with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency).
Alternative Pathways:
- Non-emergency patient transport (Diploma level)
- NSW Ambulance Traineeship and Graduate Programs
Skills and Qualities Needed:
- Clear communication and empathy
- Physical fitness
- Problem-solving and fast decision-making
- Ability to stay calm in emergencies
- Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends
