Boorowa Touch Teams Progress to Central Schools Finals

Boorowa Central School's touch football teams put on a strong showing at the recent gala day, with all teams progressing to the Central Schools Finals in Dubbo on the 2nd and 3rd of September.

Under 16 Boys

The Under 16 boys started the day in dominant fashion, defeating Braidwood 8–3 in Game 1. Tries came from Blake (2), Pheonix (2), Beau, Jordan, Banjo, and Isaiah. The team opened the scoring on the first set and maintained control throughout.

In Game 2, the boys were unable to find the same rhythm, going down 2–4 to a well-organised Coolamon side. Tries were scored by Pheonix and Billy, but the team looked a little clunky and were unable to capitalise on key opportunities.

Opens BoysThe Opens boys had already secured progression but faced a tough challenge against Coolamon. Game 1 ended in a 2–5 loss, with both tries scored by Tristan. In Game 2, Boorowa led 3–2 but were unable to hold on, eventually losing 3–5. Tries came from Tristan (2) and Pheonix.

Girls Teams – Under 16s & OpensThe Boorowa girls were the standout performers of the day, going undefeated and not conceding a single try across all matches.

Year 11 Legal Studies Students Visit Yass Local Court

On Thursday, 12 June, the Year 11 Legal Studies class from Boorowa Central School embarked on a thought-provoking excursion to the Yass Local Court. The visit formed a key part of their Stage 6 curriculum and provided a valuable opportunity to observe the workings of the NSW legal system firsthand.

Students were able to witness a variety of real cases being heard by Magistrate T. Khoo, gaining practical insight into the daily operations and legal processes of a local court. Cases ranged from more serious offences such as apprehended violence orders (AVOs), intimidation, stalking, and common assault, to lower-level offences including a driver failing to display their P-plates, driving while suspended, and possession of illicit drugs. One case that particularly caught the students' attention involved a person caught with a large knife in their car. These diverse matters highlighted the range of issues local courts deal with on a daily basis and the importance of applying the law consistently and fairly.

In addition to observing the cases, students gained a better understanding of sentencing and the range of penalties available to magistrates. This included learning the differences between:

  • Community Correction Orders (CCOs): A CCO allows an offender to remain in the community under strict conditions such as supervision by Community Corrections officers, curfews, drug and alcohol testing, or participation in rehabilitation programs, rather than serving time in jail.
  • Conditional Release Orders (CROs): A CRO is a less severe penalty, allowing the offender to remain in the community under good behaviour or other conditions. It may be imposed with or without a conviction being recorded.
  • No Conviction Recorded: In some cases, although the person is found guilty, the court chooses not to record a conviction—often for first-time or minor offenders. This approach focuses on rehabilitation and helps the individual avoid a permanent criminal record.

A highlight of the day was a personal session with Magistrate Khoo, who generously shared his experiences from both Yass and Mount Druitt Courts. He spoke candidly about the challenges of his role—mentioning that up to 100 cases may be scheduled in a single day at Yass—and offered students insights into the legal profession, law reform, and the importance of judicial discretion.

One of the final cases scheduled for the day involved an assault causing grievous bodily harm. Due to the graphic and sensitive nature of the injuries to be discussed, the prosecutor advised it was inappropriate for student observation. Magistrate Khoo agreed and declared the matter a closed court for that session.

After a full day of legal learning, the group made a well-earned stop at KFC on the way home. The students would like to sincerely thank Taryn for driving the bus and accompanying them, along with Mrs Corcoran, who organised and supervised the excursion. The experience was both educational and engaging, and has deepened the students’ understanding of the real-world application of the law.

Western Regional Secondary Cross Country Trials – 2025

Last Wednesday, thirteen of our dedicated secondary students braved the frosty conditions in Orange to compete in the 2025 Western CHS Secondary Cross Country Trials. Representing our school with determination and school spirit were: Isabella Piper, Mylee Taylor, Kirsten Piper, Lara Taylor, Jordan Grimson, Kallum Harley, Jonathon Gray, Toby Southwell, Ivy Taylor, Banjo Crozier, Sebastian Crozier, Annabelle Smith, and Mason Friend.

The Western Carnival is a fiercely competitive event, with only the top eight runners in each race officially recorded. From these, the top six athletes earn the honour of representing the Western Area at the next level.

We are incredibly proud to announce that four of our students have progressed to the 2025 NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships. Congratulations to Mylee Taylor, Kirsten Piper, Lara Taylor, and Kallum Harley for their exceptional performances.

These results mean that Mylee, Kirsten, Lara and Kallum will represent both our school and the Western Area at this prestigious event.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory

The year 7 class successfully completed their aprons this term ready to move into the Food Unit. Students continued to develop their skills and use of the sewing machines to create their own unique Aprons which included a fabric pizza shape which was appliqued on.

The class has successfully transitioned into the Food Unit to prepare Choc Chip Cookies and Pancakes. Both practical lessons assisted students to learn the procedures in the food room including collecting ingredients, reading a recipe and the correct washing up procedures. Well done to all students it has been a successful start to the new unit.

Stage 5 Food

The Food Technology class have completed their last practical lessons around the healthy eating focus and will soon be moving onto the Special Dietary Requirements unit of work which explores a variety of demographics and food related diseases. The Stage 5 class works well as an entire group displaying their excellent time management, leadership and group work skills. Each student has continued to develop their preparation and presentation skills to produce a yummy bean nacho dish and delicious Peri Peri Chicken, Halloumi and Capsicum Burgers with seasoned wedges.

Year 11 Hospitality

Year 11 Hospitality have continued to show their growing skill set preparing a series of cafe style sandwiches including a delicious Tuna Melt which was served to the BCS staff as a service period, this recipe was well received by everyone and had the most amazing aroma. Other sandwiches included spinach and feta gozleme, Caesar wraps, croque madame and  Toasted reuben sandwiches. Every student has become more independent and demonstrating their ability to problem solve, evaluate and adjust their cooking methods to produce quality food items. The majority of the class have also just completed their first Work Placement hours and assisted with catering for the Principal's Meeting, which was a great success. A great effort this term by all students.

Stage 4 Mathematics

In recent weeks, Year 7 and 8 students have been deepening their mathematical understanding through a focus on multiplicative thinking. Across these lessons, students have explored index laws, worked with indices in fractions, found highest common factors in both numerical and algebraic expressions, investigated abundant numbers, and applied the distributive law to expand algebraic expressions.

Students have engaged with the content through a combination of group discussions, guided activities, and independent tasks. A key focus has been building confidence in algebra by recognising that letters are simply placeholders for unknown or changing values, helping to demystify algebraic thinking and promote a deeper understanding of mathematical structure.
