Year 6's Visit Canberra

Canberra Trip

Term 2

We have had a very successful term in Year 6!

It has been a term packed full of fun, learning, growth and new experiences.

This term we have had a particularly strong cross-curricular focus on Australian history. We have been exploring themes such as democracy, federation, the origins of parliament, the constitution, levels of government and human rights.

Students have explored these through a range of authentic learning experiences, for example:

  • writing and presenting strong persuasive speeches on whether they believe children should have the right to vote,
  • reading and studying ‘Rivet Boy’, a historical narrative on the building of the Forth bridge in Scotland with a focus on children's rights,
  • inviting guests Jan and Edward Fyvie into our classroom for a panel discussion with a question and answer focus on the Australian government and politics,
  • and possibly the most exciting of all, heading on our year 6 camp to Canberra.

This camp brought our learning to life and gave us the opportunity to both celebrate and share the learning we had done, as well as build on it. Everyone should be very proud of the way they represented our school and their families. They were truly amazing, very respectful, knowledgeable and asked strong questions.

During camp we visited The Royal Australian Mint, Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial, The Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon and The National Archives of Australia. We played at an arcade, we bowled, we roasted marshmallows, we fed farm animals such as alpacas, llamas, goats and chickens, we shared meals together and best of all, had fun and laughed a lot together.

Here are some things year 6 had to say about their experience:

“I really enjoyed the camp and really loved the quality time with my friends and teachers. I would give this Camp a 10 out of 10.” (Elijah)

“I liked it when the class celebrated my birthday. It might have been the best camp birthday ever. I loved it.” (Chris)

“It was an amazing opportunity to be able to go to Canberra with my friends and get to see everything that I had learnt about in history!” (Emily)

“It felt like it went so quickly, but every moment was filled with joy. It was a perfect mix of fun and learning, which made the experience unforgettable.”  (Hanniel)

“One of the highlights of the camp was when we went to the Parliament House to learn more about how the government works and how it runs our nation. Canberra is an amazing place, so much to see, experiencing those great moments I had at camp, I felt happy.” (Jonathan)

Thank you to all of our amazing families for your ongoing support, we appreciate you!
