On a chilly Monday morning in the last week of term, our Year 12 students enjoyed wearing Oodies to school and enjoyed hot chocolates at second break.
Four volunteers - Vonnie, Mrs Fry, Mr Roberts and Mr Garry got involved in an ice bucket challenge.
The students from Yaei High School were treated to a unique Aussie camping experience. Guided by Kate Lang and the Year 11 Outdoor Education class, Japanese students tried out setting up a tent, toasting marshmallows from the fire and drinking billy tea. For a number of the Japanese students, the ability to eat something off a stick, cooked directly from a fire was very unfamiliar, and they all enjoyed the experience. A few were shocked when they were offered Koala as a form of bush tucker, but didn’t mind when the koalas were filled with caramello and covered in chocolate. The Year 11 students were fantastic, making sure the visitors had a great experience.
On Wednesday 23rd July, both Unit 4 Biology classes went on an excursion to the University of Melbourne to participate in two laboratory workshops. The first workshop involved counting fruit flies and analysing Gel Electrophoresis tests to understand the genetic inheritance of a trait for vestigial (short and stumpy) wings. The second workshop was conducting an ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay). This is the sort of test that pathologists run on nasal swabs when determining if someone has influenza. In this workshop, it was to compare the immunity that can be gained from vaccines (artificial immunity) or through natural immunity like exposure to the virus or passed from a mother to her infant through breastmilk.
Over the winter break, Year 11 students, Jami, Emily and Mackenzy completed the life changing 8-day Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. The annual educational experience is made available to local scholarship winners through the generous donations of local sponsors.
The students, after following the footsteps of East Gippslanders during World War 2, have a new understanding around the challenges that were faced. The students now become Kokoda Ambassadors for 12 months.
During the Term 2 holidays, Taydyn travelled to America for 2 and a half weeks with AUSA hoops. He competed in the Pro16 Puma Shoe Circuit against some of America’s top basketball talent. The tournaments in Richmond, Virginia and College Station, Texas had competitive fast paced games with lots of college coaches watching to recruit. The atmosphere in the stadium was loud and exciting.
Year 10 and 11 students were invited to attend the biggest Careers Expo in Gippsland, with over 100 exhibitors. Students who attended gained knowledge into many different career options and skills development in local industries.
All Year 10 students spent the day at Forge Theatre hearing from guest speakers Eric Agyeman, Chloe Chang and Matt Runnalls. There was also a Careers Pathway Panel run by Gippsland TAFE and Youth Council and Industry.
