Junior Years Learning Community

Junior Years - Term 3 Weeks 1 and 2

Foundation 

In Literacy we have been learning the sound-symbol correspondences for ‘w’, ‘ck’, ‘ll’ and ‘ff’. Students learnt that that two letters together can represent one sound. We have also been focusing on reading and writing tricky words, here, of, with & have. 

 

In Numeracy we have been learning about counting and place value for numbers to 20. Students have been focusing on counting, representing, comparing and ordering numbers to 20. 

 

In Religion our topic is, ‘Our Bible’. Students have been learning about why the Bible is a special book for Christians and that there are many different stories that teach us about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  

 

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’ We have had Ditto from Bravehearts visit the students this week. This session empowered the children with knowledge and skills to build confidence, resilience and personal safety awareness. 

At home you could reinforce learning by: 

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Practice reading tricky words (Set 1 – Set 6) found in the back of the Home Reading Diary. 
  • Practice handwriting lowercase letters of the alphabet. 
  • Practice writing and ordering numerals from 0-20 (please note that ‘teen’ numbers can be tricky for students to grasp). 

Year One

In Literacy, we have been learning about the bossy ‘e’ and how it changes the vowel sound in words. Some words we have been learning are tap, tape, pet, Pete, slid, slide, pop, Pope, tub and tube. We have also been focusing on spelling tricky words about, ask and our.  

 

In Numeracy,we have been learning about length. Students have been using informal units to measure the length of objects around our room.  

 

In Religion our topic is, Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories. 

 

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’ We have had Ditto from Bravehearts visit the students this week. This session empowered the children with knowledge and skills to build confidence, resilience and personal safety awareness.  

 At home you could reinforce learning by: 

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Practice spelling our tricky words (about, ask, our) and writing them in sentences. 
  • Complete a word hunt for bossy ‘e’ words in their home readers. 
  • Use informal units (paper clips, pencils, blocks) to measure objects around the home.  

Year Two 

In Literacy, we have been learning about prefixes and how they are added to the beginning of words. Our focus tricky words are minute, great and these. 

 

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on Multiplication and Division. We are learning about doubling numbers, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and making arrays. 

 

In Religion our topic is, Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories.

  • Practice spelling our tricky words (minute, great, these) and writing them in sentences. 
  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Complete a word hunt for prefix words in their home readers. 
  • Skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. 
  • Find arrays in our environment eg. egg carton and draw an array to match.
