This month, the August dates to celebrate from our cultural calendar travel the world with exciting and significant events. 

August 4 - NATIONAL ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CHILDREN'S DAY

This day recognizes and celebrates the strengths and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The 2025 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day theme Little Footsteps, Big Future honours the journeys children take as they grow - each step guided by culture, community and connection to Country.  

August 8 - INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY

International Cat Day is a celebration which takes place on 8 August of every year. It is a day to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them.

August 9 - RAKSHA BANDHAN

India

Raksha Bandhan is a popular Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. The festival is celebrated differently in many different parts of India but usually the family gets together in their fancy clothes and they eat lots of delicious food and Indian sweets.

During the festival the sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist and the brother wishes that their sister is happy and healthy. A rakhi is a piece of thread traditionally made from cotton but, nowadays rakhis are very colourful with many different designs.

August 10-16 - NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

A week-long celebration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with events and activities across Australia. 

August 16 - KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI

India

One of the most important Hindu festivals, this day celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna, believed to be the eighth reincarnation/avatar of Lord Vishnu, who gave the vital message of the Bhagwat Gita - the guiding principles for every Hindu.

August 16-23 - BOOK WEEK

Children’s Book Week is The CBCA’s key highlight national event of the year. This year’s celebration will run from Saturday 16 to Saturday 23 August.

 

The 2025 theme is Book an Adventure!

 

2025 is also a milestone year for us as we celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week! For 8 decades, CBCA has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer. Jess’ imaginative artwork reflects this mission perfectly, encouraging children to set off on adventures through time, lands, and imagination. We look forward to continuing this mission for the next 80 years and beyond!

August 21 - DAFFODIL DAY

A Cancer Council fundraiser that encourages people to purchase daffodils to support cancer research and support services. 

August 29 - WEAR IT PURPLE DAY

Wear it Purple Day is an annual LGBTQIA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia. Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTQIA+ community. 

August 29 - INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY

The aim of the day is to raise awareness about the number of dogs that are currently in rescue centres and encourage the adoption of these animals.
