SUPER STRENGTHS
At Lyndhurst Primary School, we are committed to supporting our students in developing positive character strengths that help them thrive both at school and in life. This week, we are focusing on the Super Strength of FORGIVENESS.
What is Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is the ability to let go of hurt, resentment, or anger when someone has wronged us. It doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the behaviour, but it does mean choosing to move forward without holding onto negative feelings. Forgiveness helps children build stronger friendships, solve conflicts peacefully, and maintain a positive sense of self.
Why is Forgiveness Important?
Children who learn to forgive are better able to manage their emotions, show empathy, and resolve conflicts. They are less likely to hold grudges, and more likely to maintain healthy, trusting relationships with others.
How Can Parents Help Develop Forgiveness at Home?
As parents and carers, you play a powerful role in helping your child understand and practise forgiveness. Here are some ways you can support this character strength at home:
Model It: Show forgiveness in your own relationships, including with your child.
Talk It Through: Help your child name their feelings and explore the idea of forgiving.
Use Stories: Read books or watch movies that explore forgiveness to spark discussion.
Encourage Empathy: Talk about what others might have been feeling or thinking.
Celebrate It: Acknowledge when your child forgives: “That was kind of you to let that go.”
By helping children learn how to forgive, we’re teaching them how to build stronger relationships and become resilient, compassionate individuals.
Let’s work together to nurture this valuable strength in our young learners.
At Lyndhurst Primary School, we are dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every student can thrive. As part of this commitment, students participate in weekly Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons using the Department of Education and Training’s Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum.
These lessons help students build vital life skills such as understanding and managing emotions, developing empathy, and forming positive relationships — all essential for their wellbeing and future success.
This term, our SEL program will include age-appropriate discussions and activities focused on gender norms, stereotypes, and positive gender relationships. These important topics help students:
- Understand how gender stereotypes can influence behaviour, choices and opportunities
- Learn about respect, inclusion, and the rights of all individuals
- Recognise safe and unsafe behaviours and understand their right to feel safe in their own bodies
- Practise strategies to stand up for themselves and others, and know when and how to seek help
We know these topics can be personal and may raise questions. Please be assured that all lessons are delivered by experienced educators in a respectful, age-appropriate way, with student wellbeing at the centre.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to foster resilience, respect and kindness in every child.

Simone Smith (Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader)
