Hamlet Incursion
On Wednesday 28 February, our Year 9 Elective Drama and VCE Drama and Theatre Studies students were thrilled and entertained by the VCAA Playlist play of Hamlet, which was held as an incursion in the Girton Black Box Theatre.
Presented by Sheoak Productions, Hamlet is a Commedia dell’Arte adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. This production was directed by our very talented Head of Drama, Ms Mandy Ellison, and was re-contextualised and set in the 'Circus Belli' in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1939; a boom time for the big top circus as the leading form of entertainment, but also a time that saw the world delicately balanced on the tight rope precipice of World War 2. The battle lines were drawn, sides were taken and as the tragic climax was reached, Hamlet, The Circus and Denmark were all left crumbling.
Students will continue to analyse the production’s use of symbols through the choices of costume, set and physicality within their drama classes. They will also look at the transformation of character and place and the dynamic use of expressive skills by the actors, who manipulate their voices and bodies to perform the Commedia style and portray multiple characters.
