Grade 1 & 2
Term 4 - Week 5
Earlier in the term the Grade 1/2's went to the Naracoorte Caves for an excursion. Each class wanted to share a recount of our trip.
1/2 Newton:
Last Thursday, 17th October, we went to the Naracoorte Caves. We went into two caves, one was the Alexandra Cave and the other was The Victoria Fossil Cave and we went into the Wonambi Fossil Centre. They were very dark inside. Jack and Andrew were our guides. They taught us about how animals used to live and the types of animals that were there a very long time ago. Many of the animals fell down the holes that led into caves and then they died of starvation. They found their skeletons in the caves.
We saw stalactites and stalagmites in the Alexandra Cave and they were beautiful. We got a little lost in the Victoria Fossil Cave but luckily we were going the right way.
We had the best day ever!
1/2 Burke:
On Thursday the 17th of October we went to the Naracoorte Caves. When we arrived we explored the Victoria Fossil Cave with our guide Jack. We learnt about an extinct animal called a Thialakaleo or ‘Leo’ for short. Jack taught us lots of things but our favourite thing he taught us was the difference between Stalagmites and Stalactites and a trick to remember them. Stalactites hang from the roof because they need to hang on super tight, and stalagmites are from the ground because they might reach the roof one day. The next cave we explored was the Alexandra Cave with our guide Jack again. In this cave our class learnt about all the things above us, like the trees that we could see their roots hanging from the roof. After lunch we explored the fossil area and looked at the giant diorama. Before catching the bus back to school we played on the cave playground and in the giant hut. We all had a great day!
1/2 Bush:
All the Grade one and two students went to the Naracoorte Caves. It took hours. We stopped for a fruit break. When we arrived at the Naracoorte Caves we went to the visitor centre and saw statues of animals. Some of the animals are no longer around. These animals were very big and called megafauna. It was great to see. Then we had a snack and played on an excellent playground which had a pit and a net over it. That was fun to play on. We went to a fossil cave, which was full of bones and stalagmites and stalactites. The cave was the Victoria Cave. Then we had a quick lunch and went to the Alexander caves and saw more stalagmites and stalactites and the Lost Child. (It was a boy.) And we saw how fossils are made. Cool fact: Did you know that the water in the caves is very clean because it drips down through the earth and becomes clean.
