Year 3 - Middle Unit

What a fun couple of weeks we have had in Year 3.

Let us tell you all about what we’ve been learning!

Literacy

In Reading we have been learning about evaluating what we have read, with a focus on evaluating characters and their likability and believability. We have been studying ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis and have been looking at all the ways he endears his characters (such as Aslan and Mr Tumnus) to the reader through their motivations and personality traits.

In Writing, we are drafting a fantasy text with a focus on retelling popular fantasy stories from the antagonist’s perspective (eg. from the villain's point of view). We are making sure we use correct punctuation, so it is easy for their reader to follow and understand. We have selected our favourite villains that include the Wicked Witch of the West, The Big Bad Wolf, Evil Stepmother, Queen of Hearts and the White Witch! We cannot wait to share these stories with you!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about time! Students have been using analog clocks to practise telling the time down to 5 minutes, and even 1 minute intervals. Year 3 students have also been learning about elapsed time and have been mastering the art of calculating how much time has passed using several different methods. To do this, we are practising using written strategies to solve elapsed time that include the Mountains, Hills and Rocks Strategy and T-Chart. 

Inquiry

Last week, the Year 3 students participated in an incursion called the ‘Cosmo Dome’ where a giant inflatable planetarium was set up in the Multipurpose Hall. After we had ventured inside, we learned about the different seasons, night and day, Earth, the Sun and Moon's movements.

Following our incursion, the Year 3 students made their very own sundials which they used to track the movement of the sun and the passing of time. 

Carlsruhe

We had so much fun experiencing Year 4 at Carlsruhe! We worked with our Year 4 buddies and explored Carlsruhe in a variety of activities that included mapping, meeting the animals, writing a fantasy story on Google Classroom and building a cubby.
