Year One

Year Ones Explore Farming at CERES!

Our excited Year One students had a fantastic day out at CERES, participating in the Farming for Our Future excursion. This hands-on experience taught them where our food comes from and how we can work together to care for our planet. The excursion took place at CERES, a community-focused environmental park in Brunswick. It was the perfect setting for our students to explore the connections between farming and sustainability linking to our current central idea, communities grow, source and use food in many ways.

Highlights of the Day

  • Farm Tour: The students explored the CERES farm, seeing how vegetables grow and meeting animals like chickens and worms.
  • Hands-on Gardening: They planted seeds and learned about the life cycle of plants, sparking plenty of excitement about growing their own food.
  • Composting and Sustainability: Students discovered how food scraps can turn into compost to help plants grow and learned why reducing waste is so important for the environment.

Extra Special Moments

  • Birthday Fun: We also got to celebrate the wonderful Ms Strbac Low’s birthday, with a tasty birthday cupcake from Jizel!
  • Baby Surprise: We bumped into Ms Mina while at CERES and got to meet her new baby Malley!

Bringing It Back to School

Our Year Ones came away with valuable lessons about sustainable farming, food production, and how their actions at home can make a difference. This experience has sparked a series of follow-up activities in class. Our Year Ones are now working on taking action in their own lives inspired by our excursion!
