Threads and Textiles in Foundation Classes

Students in Foundation have been inquiring into threads, textiles and stitchery.

We began by using drawing materials to ‘take a marker for a walk around the page’. We then used skewers to poke holes into our paper along the lines. These holes now became the stitching holes.

We learnt concepts such as the ‘eye of the needle’, ‘fabric’ and ‘textiles’ and discovered different ways to thread our needles. Tying knots was especially challenging.

We used our threaded needles and created stitches around our paper.

We then discovered ‘hessian’ - a rough fabric that has an open weave. We used slicks to decorate our hessian pieces and are now in the process of using our needles and selecting our own wool to create stitches throughout our piece.

This activity has definitely taught us resilience and patience!!

Here are a few of our artworks in progress!
