OUT AND ABOUT

Year 8 Geography Melbourne Zoo Fieldwork

All Year 8 students undertaking Geography studies during Semester 2 had the wonderful opportunity to partake in a fun day at the Melbourne Zoo. This excursion served as geographical fieldwork, focusing on the importance Rainforest biomes.

Students visited rainforest animals including orangutans, Western lowland gorillas, Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants. They also enjoyed immersive close encounters inside the lemur and butterfly exhibits. Students were encouraged to wear a bright hat to attract the butterflies, and this seemed to work!

Thank you to all the staff who attended the excursions, and especially Mr Brendan McKinnon for his efforts in organising these fabulous experiences.

Great Victorian Bike Ride Training

If you live in Frankston or the Mornington Peninsula, chances are you have seen our Great Victorian Bike Ride participants out on the local roads training for the event. Students have been training on weekends and afterschool, learning new riding skills and building up their strength and endurance.

Last weekend our students clocked up over 60kms and made it up Arthur’s Seat! In a few weeks students will complete their last ride – a 100km route from Frankston to Portsea.

Thank you to the teachers Mr Malcolm Burt, Mrs Cheryl Hodgson and Ms Ginger Parker who have spent their time so far training and upskilling the students.

We wish the 25 students all the best when the camp begins in Albury Wodonga on Saturday 23 November.

Year 11 Geography Phillip Island Fieldwork

Our Year 11 Geography Students were lucky enough to travel to Phillip Island on a sunny day to complete fieldwork investigating the ethics of eco-tourism at “The Nobbies” and The Penguin Parade. Graham Burgan, a previous national park ranger with over 35 years experience, provided an insightful tour of the area, where students observed little penguins and Cape Baron Geese signets in their natural habitat. Students learnt about the positive and negative environmental, economic and social impacts of tourism in this significant location; Phillip Island is the second most visited destination in Victoria behind Melbourne City. Next year the students will investigate land use changes at Martha Cove and investigate the impacts on the surrounding region of Mount Martha and Safety Beach.
