Captains' Corner

Bella Harris and Sophie Lloyd - Creative Arts Captains

We are almost halfway through 2024 (which is absolutely bizarre), and so much has happened, and yet so much is still to come.

We started the year off with our musical, The Little Mermaid Jr, and it was an absolute hit! A packed Assembly Hall on each night saw audiences entertained and enthralled in the display of art, music, sound, drama and lighting.

Last week we enjoyed a spectacular Opus 1 concert which featured performances from Corelli Strings, Avanti, Ciao Bella, Junior String Ensemble, Music Extension Student: Chloe Noon, Allegria Chamber Strings, Symphonic Winds, and Campo Della Voci.

Tonight, we have the privilege of participating in Opus 2 which features: Percussion Ensemble, Viotti Strings, Big Band, Canzona, Piccolo Choir, Faure Flutes, Wind Orchestra, Vivo Strings, and Paganini Strings. We are very excited to see how all the hard work of the students pays off in the beautifully thrilling performances tonight.

Over the long weekend, Allegria Chamber Strings hit the road to St George with Mr D, Mrs Searle, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Lockyer, Mrs D, and of course our special friend Ziggy (Mr D's dog)! We travelled west and spent four nights playing and connecting with our peers through Clayfield Music. I would like to give a special thanks to Tiffany Lee (Year 10), Do Hee Lee (Year 9), Lucija Wiggins (Year 10) and Caitlin Southwell (Year 11) for their commitment to music and constant enthusiasm during this trip.

Some highlights of the trip included:

  • Performing at schools; St George State School which was celebrating their 150th anniversary and St Patrick's Catholic Primary School as well as an aged care home on Friday
  • Playing at Riversands Winery on Friday night, and being able to meet and talk with Old Collegians
  • Sightseeing at 'William' the Wombat statue in Thallon, Thallon Farming Silos and finally enjoying lemonade at Queensland's oldest pub; the Nindigully Pub on Saturday
  • Playing at the St George Show on Sunday where 'Country Roads' was a crowd favourite
  • Finally consuming the award-winning bread from St George Bakery, which we miss dearly.

We would also like to give a special mention to Mrs D for her support, dedication and last but not least...her smores. We appreciate you!

After tonight, we quickly turn our focus to Arts Day on Wednesday 29 May. House groups have been working very hard to put together dance performances and choir songs to be performed for each other in the first and last sessions of the day. In our middle session, we have the privilege of participating in one of many workshops including musical theatre, makeup, production, dance, theatre sports and visual arts.

We are also starting to prepare for our workshop with BBC in June, as well as our upcoming On the Green event and Opus 3 concert.

We can't contain our excitement! Looking forward to partnering with you in the coming weeks!
