Attendance

This year we aim to improve student attendance rates to an above 95% average. If your student is absent please contact Kurnai’s absence hotline on 5132 3711 or contact Ross Johnson directly via Compass.

Learning Behaviour Updates

LBU’s will be released in week 5 of this term. I encourage you to sit down with your child and review their progress and continue to set goals to help them achieve their own academic success.

Year 9 Melbourne Discovery Camp

Final permission forms will appear on Compass shortly. Students have been selected via the expression of interest form that was on Compass during Term 1. There are still several spots available, if your student would like to attend the camp please contact Ross Johnson.

Morrisby Interviews

In Term 2, Year 9 students get the incredible opportunity to complete a Morrisby profiling session. My Career Insights (Morrisby) is a program for all Year 9 students in government secondary schools. This program will help your Year 9 child to:

• Learn about what skills and abilities they could bring to a job.

• Find out about what jobs match their abilities, interests and personality, and the subjects they need for those jobs.

As part of the program, your child will:

• Complete a series of online questions and quizzes (on the Morrisby Profile website) at school.

• Receive a Morrisby Profile Report showing the results from the questions and quizzes and possible jobs that match their abilities, interests, and personality.

• Have a 30-minute meeting with a Morrisby-trained Career Practitioner, who will explain the report to your child.

Uniform

As the weather gets colder it is important that students wear the appropriate uniform such as:

Kurnai logoed hoodie or puffer jacket

Navy blue or white long sleeved undershirts

Navy blue pants/shorts

If your student does not have the correct uniform or needs assistance with uniform, please contact a member of the Year 9 Team.

Tech School Excursion

Today I learned about renewable energy and how renewable energy is now used for modern day tasks like farming. Many farms have turned to robots to help with labour, such as milking cows and looking after crops. We have learned how it helps with farms and how we could use it.  We have tried many ways to educate ourselves on renewable energy.  - Shayla Lovelace

Around The Classrooms

Digital Technologies:

Students have been hard at work planning and designing their final project in GameMaker. Last week they decided on what game they wanted to make and started writing down ideas and how the game would work. Now with their planning done students have been creating the background, sprites and animations for their game before they begin the process of programming and testing.

Humanities: In Year 9 Humanities this term, the students are focusing on food security and food around the world. They are learning about different regions and biomes of the Earth, and how this can affect how food is produced and distributed. They are also learning about the relationship between climate and biomes.

Science: In  Year 9 Science this term, the students are learning about the structure of the Earth and plate tectonics. The students are learning how the plates beneath the Earth surface move and that this can cause events such as earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as the formations of structures on the Earth such as mountains and seafloor trenches.
