English - Overview

Reading: in Reading sessions this term, students have been focussing upon different reading and comprehension strategies including making inferences, critiquing, visualising, making predictions and making connections to texts. Students have engaged in all reading tasks and have done a great job applying the comprehension strategies to different types of texts. Students have also spent time in reading sessions reading through their production scripts and practicing their parts.

Writing: in Writing this term students began by writing a recount of their time at camp. It was great to recap what they did during the 3 days. We then moved onto letter writing where students had to write a letter home to family from the perspective of a deployed soldier. All students did an amazing job writing their letters and using cold tea and coffee to stain their letters. In recent weeks we have been learning about the structure and language of biographies. Students have begun to write their own biography of a person of their choosing.

Speaking and Listening: This term we have been working on developing our active listening skills by doing class activities and presentations. Students will be working on their public speaking skills in the coming weeks and will be asked to present a short speech about one of the countries they have researched for Inquiry.

Electives

On Friday 17th May students in Year 3-6 started their first elective of the year. Electives for this round include drawing, acting, water colours, sock puppets, chess, board games, team sports, DJing, aerobics, athletics, kids in the kinder, rock band, zoology and more! All students had a wonderful time at their first elective and look forward to the remaining sessions.

Mother's Day Afternoon

On Friday 9th May we held a Mother's Day afternoon for all the special people in our student's lives. In was wonderful to see lots of families stop by the Year 5/6 Gallery and draw portraits of each other.
