Comprehension:

During Term Two, students continued to build on their toolbox of reading comprehension strategies. They continued to link their knowledge of three main text types (imaginative, informative, and persuasive) to mentor texts presented in Comprehension lessons. Doing this provided multiple opportunities to practise and recall information previously taught.

The toolbox strategies covered were: predicting - what I already know and what information I can find, connecting - to self, text and world and visualising – what I interpret from the information I have been given.

Spelling:

This Term, Year Two students have followed the sequence of he InitiaLit 2 Program. They begun with the prefix, 'un' and developed an understanding about the word 'prefix' and how it is a cluster of letters at the beginning of base words. They then moved onto word work about suffixes, and learnt how they are digraphs and trigraphs at the end of base words to change the words meaning or tense.

New tricky words have been introduced. (These are words that do not follow regular spelling patterns and can only be learnt through visual repetition).

Writing:

Throughout Term Two, students in Year Two have been focusing on Informative Texts. As this was their first formal exposure to the text type, students built their knowledge by participating in a scaffolded approach to writing. This included developing an understanding about facts versus opinions when writing. Students worked as a class to record information about 'Gorillas' and then co constructed an information report using a graphic organiser.

After building confidence, students were given the opportunity to pick their own animal to research. They recorded facts in a fact file and organised it into the correct categories by using scaffolded organisers. In order to successfully write their own informative text, students learnt about the structural features of an information report such as sub headings, diagrams and text boxes. They then drafted their animal reports and made attempts to improve their writing by following the CUPS editing strategy. After conferencing, each student constructed their animal report posters and completed a self reflection about their finished product.
