From Julia and Nick, Science specialists
Hello to the families of budding scientists! Julia and Nick here, your new Science Team for 2024. Julia will be teaching the juniors in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2, while Nick will be teaching Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. This year, the Science section of the newsletter will alternate between reporting on junior and senior science.
Prep
Preps are exploring the weather in Earth and Space Sciences. We’ve created some weather wheels to report on the weather to our families each day, sung songs to describe the weather and created corresponding actions. We hope you’ve been enjoying the weather reports each morning!
Year 1
We are learning about habitats, beginning with soil. We’ve explored the feel, look, and texture of different soils (sand and loam), learned what soil is made of, and gone out into the garden to look for, identify and photograph different parts of a plant - roots, stems, leaves and flowers.
Year 2
We have been understanding both how important and precious fresh water is to the whole planet - it’s uses, where we can find it, and just how much of it is actually accessible to us (only about 1%)! The students were set a challenge to see which household function uses the most water. The result left a lot of us surprised - see if your child remembers to be surprised too! Students have also been learning about salt and freshwater collection sites, played bingo with these sites and modelled them with playdough.
