Year 5/6 Report

Welcome back to the new ⅚ cohort for 2024.

This year the Big Idea for learning is ‘Inclusion’ with term 1 focusing on equality & rights. In this unit, Year 5/6 students will build an understanding of human rights and their connection to inclusion and equality. Students gain knowledge about fundamental human rights principles and understand their role in promoting a just and inclusive society.

For our literacy lessons, students have been introduced and are reading the novel “Can you see me?” by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. They are exploring and responding to both the novel & various information reports that further dive into the topic of Autism and Disability.

For our inquiry lessons, we have been looking at the types of  basic human rights and the difference between equity & equality.

As a part of our Inclusion unit, the students were lucky enough to have Peter from Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria come and run the Wheeltalk incursion with us. The incursion promotes diversity, acceptance, and disability, placing a primary focus on inclusion. Peter gave us great insight into his life and shared unique stories of lived disability. Peter is a Paralympic Athlete and he spoke to our students about perseverance, acceptance, diversity and the importance of inclusion. The students also got to play wheelchair basketball.

In Mathematics, Year 5 students have been introduced to the program Maths Pathway and recently completed their diagnostic assessments. Year 6 students have been able to jump straight into completing their modules and unpacking both new and familiar mathematical concepts.

Students from Year 5 & 6 were also invited to participate in a Melbourne Storm coaching clinic and learn the basic skills of how to play rugby.

Over the next two Fridays, selected 5/6 students will be participating in this year’s Gala Sports Days. We will be competing against other schools in the district in Modified Tennis, Volleyball, Softball and Cricket. Students remaining at school will be participating in a tennis workshop organised by Essendon Tennis Club.
